An Offering to the Dead [Awakening/Open] - Posted Apr 19, 2018 20:43:22 GMT -7

Inugami hesitated momentarily as he watched his master run off in one direction while the young blonde fled in the other, then continued after the girl. His faith in Kaito's abilities was enough to assure him that he would survive the dangerous encounter.
As it turned out, however, he didn't have to worry about either of them. Supernatural energies flared up around the teen and the canine spirit witnessed a macabre duplicate of her come to life before obliterating her assailants.
<". . .">
Inugami promptly turned on his hind paw to return to the others. He was just a Demon. Asking questions like 'what the fuck was that' was far above his magnetite paygrade.
Meanwhile, the ghost closest to Kaito found itself veering off course as an arrow embedded itself into its ectoplasm. Or whatever its body was made out of. Unfortunately the second somehow managed to propel itself off the ground and lunge at the Summoner, slashing across his side. While the claws easily tore through his jacket (and one of his good ones, too...), it was stopped by a sudden collision with something solid and metal. The impact sent him rolling into the grass. As he scrambled to his feet Kaito gave his side a few pats, then pulled his shorn jacket off. One golden eye widened at the sight of a very real Sauer P220 holstered against his chest. The man allowed himself a moment to wonder before realization set in.
"That's right, huh. Father did urge me to take this. Did he already know what was going to happen?"
Yet another question to file away until later. A loud groan signaled the encroaching return of the Slasher. With narrowed gaze Kaito unclasped the holster and drew his weapon. What little hesitation he'd initially carried had long vanished; practiced motions undid the safety on the handgun before he fired a trio of bullets straight into the monster.
Assuming the best, that would leave the bow-wielding woman to clean up the rest of their assailants.
But assuming is bad.

As Mary started on the path back, she kept eyeing the figure she'd summoned. In a way, it seemed like the same type of entity that the dog had become, but at the same time, different. Very. very different. While Mary might have called the dog a helpful spirit, her Persona could only be described as macabre. It fit her, she realized, but then she also realized that other than the term 'Persona' that had embedded itself in her mind, she didn't know what it was even called.
But then she did. "Melinoe." That name, too, simply came to mind when she thought about it.
"We need to get back." Mary realized, as she said that, that that wasn't quite right. Somehow, it was still just 'her.' Melinoe did, after all, look like she could be Mary's double. Excepting all the parts of her that were missing.
She ran back down the path, directing her Persona low to the ground so that the glow it seemed to give off could serve in place of her flashlight. It didn't take long to locate the woman, and with no sign of any bodies she had to assume that Nagano had run off in the other direction. There were only a couple shadows left, as well, and with the success she'd had in saving herself, Mary knew that she could be of help in cleaning them up. "Melinoe!" she called out, and the macabre Persona rose above the path, spilling out more of that hellish energy to engulf another of the creatures. This time, Mary could personally feel the strain of doing so, as though she had to force it out rather than simply letting it happen as it had just before. But the cursed energies poured out nonetheless, and swallowed up the masked monster as easily as before.
Notes: The shadows are beginner level and weak to Curse, if that wasn't immediately clear.

Alisa continued to aim and shoot arrows at the apparitions that were attacking them. She noted that her attacks weren't doing too bad against them, and it wasn't long before a stream of events had occurred in this enclosed space. First, Alisa caught the site of Nagano's Inugami return to the others, seemingly having seen something even he had trouble comprehending. On the other hand, Ongyo-ki seemed to be able to understand it a bit better once Alisa turned away and saw the blonde girl returning to the scene, with a strange macabre entity that seemed to move ahead of her for a time. Well, this kid did it. Ongyo-ki cryptically mentioned, but before Alisa could inquire about it, the booming voice of Ongyo-ki continued ringing out. The girl managed to awaken something powerful, you could call it an inner self. I'm not too knowledgeable on the details as it pertains to the human mind and you know very well I care little about mortal and worldly affairs. However, I did tell you that this girl could survive. Alisa acknowledged as the Brit called out a name and lo' and behold, the spirit that was now a part of her had used dark energy to attack the apparitions.
Alisa quickly turned her attentions back to where Nagano was, who now had a gun drawn and was shooting at the masked things. Shaking her head in disdain, Alisa put away her bow after realizing she ran out of arrows, and rushed towards Nagano's location, brandishing her combat knife, her arms coated with electricity as she beckoned for Ongyo-ki to give her strength. With a slash, Alisa intercepted a ghost that Nagano was not shooting at, slashing at it with a lightning-powered attack.

The tide had long since shifted in the humans' favor. Though he had yet to focus his eye on her, Kaito noticed that the blonde smelled different - or rather, similar. It was the same scent that this space carried, that the woman carried, that he probably carried. More fuel to the earlier hypothesis.
Ah. There was another monster. He really needed to stop musing in the middle of combat. With a sharp turn Kaito pointed the barrel of his gun towards the approaching phantasm only to watch a blur of bolt and blue dart past, slicing through the hostile. That was... different. More pieces were starting to connect in his mind - was this a bigger clue as to what Inugami had meant when referring to her as a channe--
'Focus, Noodly.' Right. Though he'd had a moment's reprieve to think, the limping approach of the ghoul he had shot at punctuated its end. Before Kaito could raise his gun, Inugami skidded to a halt in front of him, luminous energy crackling around the uncorked bell gourd he'd opened.
<"There is no need for such a raucous tool, my lord. Bid me deal the final blow,"> he growled, coal eyes focused on the enemy. Gloved hands raised in surrender before securing the firearm back in its holster.
"Alright, alright. No need to wag your tail so hard - get it!" With the command issued, the canine spirit conjured forth another mass of light before sending it hurtling into the monster.

The light did indeed deal the final blow to the monster, burning its body away and leaving silence to fall once again on the forest of spirits. Mary returned to the spot where she'd been before running, finding the remains of the umbrella that someone, possibly she herself, had trampled during the fight. The spokes were broken, and the canopy was torn, rendering it unusable. "Bugger all..." she mutted in English as she picked what was left of it up and then folded it shut. It would have to be thrown away, but she at least wasn't going to litter in strange worlds. At least her staff had stayed in her hand the whole time...
Wait.
She looked at the worn down hiking staff in her hand and realized that it was now solid metal, and in like-new combat condition. "Is this normal?" she asked the others through heavy breaths. "Well, nothing about this situation is normal, but within the context of what's already happening." The Persona Melinoe still floated above her, fixing whoever looked up at her with a red-eyed stare.

Nagano had his Inugami eliminate the last enemy, it disappeared as quietly as it was, underwhelming. Silence reigned again in the forest as Alisa looked at Nagano, and then looked at the blonde kid who had returned after collecting her broken and bashed up umbrella. She said something in English which Alisa barely understood due to her mother. However, it was in British slang so she didn't know what she meant by that anyways. Alisa chalked it up as a curse. The stick which the English girl originally had with her had also somehow changed between when she got here to when she acquired her power. It was solid metal and looked like it could be quite painful if a regular person was hit by it. Upon questioning, Alisa shrugged. Ongyo-ki didn't make any constructive comments on the matter either.
"It might have happened when you woke that up," Alisa looked at the macabre apparition that hovered above the young blonde. "But we were all too busy trying to get rid of those things, I couldn't give you a straight answer. Anyway, are we done here? All we really learned is that we entered a pocket space. We need to get out of here otherwise we won't be able to get back home."

'...What the fuck is that.'
One eye stared at another, bigger eye as Kaito regrouped with the others. It would be a lie to say that he wasn't at least slightly perturbed by the lookalike's harrowing features... But, well. The last few weeks had done wonders to temper his reactions to the outlandish. Sensing that the battle had concluded, Inugami reverted back to his non-combat form in a burst of smoke, then trotted over towards the humans.
"You're gonna have to rewire your standards for normal after today. ...And so am I." Kaito coughed, glancing over at the Persona again before cracking a more relaxed grin. His coat was slung over a shoulder - he also did not feel wont to litter in this isolated space. Yukito could probably sew it back to working order. "Raikiri's got a point, though. We should make tracks out of here before another group of those things come down on us. Dialogue can resume afterwards." Man and dog (demon) both paused to tilt their noses up and sniff. In perfect unison. They didn't seem to notice the timing, either.
<"The scent of your world lingers in the distance,"> Inugami spoke after a few moments, tail wagging eagerly as he raised a paw to point. <"Pray allow me to guide you and we should be able to return from there.">

Mary blinked. The man called Nagano, who owned and commanded a talking warrior dog who could change size and fight with magical light, seemed to think that she was unusual with her Persona. "Well, I've always been the weird one in my group of peers. Adjusting my 'normal' shouldn't be too hard." Her accent was leaking through a lot more now, even while speaking Japanese. Her breathing was still heavy as well, even though she'd been standing still for a couple minutes. "Leaving sounds good though, I can fight properly now but...wow that was tiring."
She turned in the direction that the dog pointed. Now that she had Melinoe she could feel the strange realm they were in to an extent, and it did feel...thinner in that direction, to what extent that made any sense. "Mmhm, that feels the right way. Lead the way out and I will follow." Melinoe vanished as she said this, and once again the area was lit only by the light of the wisps and Mary's flashlight.

Alisa didn't react to Nagano being rather spooked at the macabre appearance of the apparition which floated by the young girl. Which was strange, because he was the demon summoner out of the three of them, so he shouldn't be intimidated by the concept... Regardless, Alisa didn't make much of it and the battle had already concluded. She had obtained some minor clues but overall didn't get a very clear view of the overall picture. A lot of effort expended for little gain, which disappointed her but at least nobody died... Alisa looked towards the direction which the inugami and also the woman pointed towards. Looks like we all have the same thoughts. Ongyo-ki mentioned quietly to Alisa, but she also knew that the three of them now had their own methods to protect themselves and find the way out.
"Let's go." Alisa quietened down as she urged the other two to hurry up and get moving.

It was probably better for all parties involved that Kaito kept his relative lack of exposure as a Summoner under wraps. He'd only been at this for a few weeks.
Inugami needed no further prompting and darted towards the edge of the space. His master spared one more glance to the two before dashing off himself. They wouldn't have too terribly far to travel, either - a good minute's worth of chasing the doggo led them to the boundary of the dimension. There was that mirage-like image of the real world again. If that's how things looked to them, perhaps it was also the cause of other rumor spreaders claiming to see mirages.
Well, it didn't matter. Inugami had already jumped forward, crossing the barrier and vanishing. Kaito took a deep breath before striding forward.
...And getting soaked. The rain hadn't let up at all since the beginning of their foray. A displeased groan slipped past the man's lips as he threw his coat over his head and waited for the others to emerge.
"Inugami."
<"Yes, my lord?">
"Remind me tomorrow to commission the office for an umbrella that can double as a summoning implement."
<"...An odd command, but I will honor it.">

Mary made a run for it alongside the others, spotting the mirage-like rippling of the world once more. This time, though, it was a distinct departure from the strange spirit world around them, and in fact looked like the real world that she'd left. Seeing this, Mary pushed herself to run a little faster, until she passed through the mirage as well, and found herself back in the normal world. The rain was still falling outside, and while it had seemed almost purposefully ignorable while in the spirit world, it was now back in full, and coming down even harder than before she'd gone in. Mary snapped open her umbrella, only for another spoke to break as it opened, and for her to remember that it had been trampled and broken. She let out a heavy sigh, and raised it over her head regardless. Some protection from the rain was better than none. Unfortunately, she was still getting plenty of rain on her, and it made the occasional breeze into a biting cold. "When did it get so bloody cold out," she muttered in English. "That aside...I'm in a bit of an awkward position now, knowing less about what we just went through than the rest of you. Can you fill me in, or should we get under shelter first?"ALISA AYAKURA KAITO NAGANO

Out of the three of them, Alisa was the only one who didn't seem terribly concerned about the weather. After leaving the pocket space with the others and finally making it back to the so-called real world, Alisa heaved a deep breath. She didn't seem too out of breath though and was more relieved that they were able to leave without much incident. The blonde was struggling with her broken umbrella while the young man named Nagano seemed to audibly make it known that he needed an umbrella for such situations. Alisa decided not to worry too much about it. Soon the British girl spoke something in English, most likely a complaint about the inclement weather but soon asked for some information about what had just happened. After all, she had just obtained this strange new power and didn't understand much about the pocket space either. " Let's get to shelter first. It's raining outside and you'll catch a cold if you get too wet." Alisa urged, ignoring the fact that she herself didn't seem too concerned about the rain. On the other hand, her body was naturally strengthened by being in a link with Ongyo-ki, so she wouldn't get sick from the rain very easily if at all. MARIAN WILSON KAITO NAGANO

While it left him irritated, Kaito forged on in the chilly weather and beckoned the ladies to follow. Inugami had already started to lead a path that would presumably lead them out of the woods and back to the road where... Well, he didn't know about them but he had a very dry car parked at the outskirts of the forest.
As they traveled the canine spirit began to talk. His voice carried with uncanny clarity towards the three behind him despite the front-facing march he was committed to.
<"From experience, I can assure you that the space we entered is not a common phenomenon - even in the realm of the supernatural. It is not a separate realm like that from which my kin and I originate from, but it yet carries the sensation of a different world. That place... A distortion would be an apt descriptor for the time being. Something that exists by twisting the reality of your world.">
Kaito remained silent through the dialogue, opting to let Inugami's assessment sink in. He had not had enough time to read all of his father's investigation notes, but he had the distinct feeling that hoping for answers within those files would prove futile.
[Here's that funky transition, Batman.]
Their adventure to the edge of the forest was thankfully uneventful. Rain, footsteps, and the occasional echo of a distant vehicle passing were the only sounds to accompany them. It was fortunate that the road was coming up, as the downpour had only continued to intensify. Parked neatly beside the highway was a sleek black sports car that Inugami bounded over to. Kaito jerked a gloved thumb towards the car and its headlights flashed.
"Hop in - if you don't need a ride, you can at least dry off."

Mary did not have a car. She had, in fact, taken a bus to the edge of town and walked from there. While not the most appealing idea, she could have walked back as well, especially if she missed the last bus back. That part hadn't really been in the plan, but she had no idea how long she was actually in the forest. So the offer of a ride was appealing, especially when her protection from the rain was no longer very protective. "Nice car. And thank you," Mary said, gratefully accepting the offer to get in. Once she did, she pulled out her black notebook once more, and opened to the page where she'd been taking notes on the incident. She added a few more, including what she knew so far of her strange power, Persona, and the fact that while the two with her seemed to know more than her, they also had very little to offer on just what that power was. She also made a note of the monsters, along with a haphazard sketch of the masks, and finally another note next to "spirit world" with the talking dog's explanation. "Distortion." "My name's Mary, by the way. Mary Wilson," she said, once she'd finished her notes. "Thank you two again for your help." ALISA AYAKURA KAITO NAGANO

Alisa traveled to the forest on foot. With Ongyo-ki empowering her, she had somewhat enhanced endurance and agility so she could get to the site of investigation. Fortunately, that guy Nagano came here in a Fairlady, so she would have a ride back. Alisa nodded in acknowledgement towards Nagano and quietly entered the car. Alisa's field of vision caught the young girl writing some stuff in a black notebook but it was likely that she was simply just writing what she experienced down on paper which was a fair thing to do after encountering something that, in her perspective, would be considered... Mysterious? Alisa didn't dwell on it for very long. Eventually, the British girl finally introduced herself. Mary Wilson was her name. " ...Alisa Ayakura." Alisa quietly also replied with her name, but her voice was audible enough for everyone in the car to hear. She flicked two business cards at Nagano and Mary containing her email [weiss.ayakura@fc2.us] and her contact number. It didn't have an address on it but the card indicated that she was a private investigator. " Plus, this was nothing much. We were trying to look into this matter anyways. It's only proper to help each other out in this situation." MARIAN WILSON KAITO NAGANO
