AppearanceHikaru looks fairly unremarkable and easy to spot within a crowd. He’s 5’7”, weighing 147 lbs. He has short dark hair and brown eyes. He used to be fairly athletic but recently gave up exercise and is starting to get a little ‘soft’.
When at work at Mishiro High he wears dark suits. They are often a little bit wrinkled with his tie off centered (at the displeasure of some of his more veteran colleagues). When outside of work he tends to be more casual, taking off the jacket and tie. On days off he might even be seen wearing slacks and a t-shirt/sweater.
PersonalityAll his life Hikaru has been energetic, optimistic, and full of zeal. He enjoys a good laugh between his friends and colleagues. He enjoys the feeling of completing a task. His instinct in a group setting is to take charge but will (begrudgingly) cede that leadership role to someone else. When at his job he is frank with many of his students.
Recently however he’s becoming more pessimistic, at ends with his typical self. He is bitter and jealous hearing about some of his fellow classmates, believing they are accomplishing much more than he is at his current job. Sometimes he takes that bitterness out at his job. It is a trait he recognizes and tries to correct.
Likes: Carbonated Sugar Drinks. Sour candies. Occasional drink (or three) among friends.
Dislikes: An increasing disdain for his current profession. “Troublemakers”. Feeling ‘small’ and ‘unimportant’. Spicy foods
Hobbies: Movies (preferably action), football (soccer) or other competitive events.
Goals: To be a positive force in the world. To do great, beneficial things. Either by remaining as a teacher, or perhaps doing something else.
HistoryHikaru grew up in a loving home as an only child. As he grew up his father would impart onto Hikaru how important a good work ethic was to get ahead in this world while his mother focused on how important it is to become a good person to make that world worth living in. His two parents shaped him growing up and turned him into the teen he was when he enrolled in Mishiro High.
As a youth Hikaru truly believed that anything was possible with hard work and determination. His energy felt limitless and he pushed himself forward to achieve his goals. He balanced studying, the demands of his clubs, and a small but active social life at Mishiro High. His scores on tests, while not top in class, were always high. He had joined the football (soccer) club as the goalie for his team. And while not super popular, had one or two close friends he could always been seen with.
The day before his high school graduation his father passed away. Hikaru was devastated and the ceremony had felt far more hollow than he had originally imagined. The only thing that got him by was the promise he made about doing good work. And thanks to his mother, he took that as doing not only good, but meaningful work. He applied to the local university, preparing to do something meaningful. In a few years he applied and was accepted as a teacher for his old school, Mishiro High. Full of excitement and vigor he was prepared to be the best teacher he could be.
Unfortunately as he grew older that fire of his dimmed. He became a teacher to help the next generation. To strengthen them, educate them, and push them forward; yet all he felt was helplessness. Too often he felt he didn’t actually make a difference. Those who would succeed would succeed, and those who would fail would fail. He began to believe no amount of influence by him could actually affect these students. Thus he began to feel useless. That his role as teacher could be played by anyone, without changing the end result.
This caused him to begin questioning his own choices. Why did he waste his time trying to become a teacher, when he could done something more meaningful? When he could have been something more?
