Most people try not to return to a place where something terrible had happened to them. That had been Shion's plan, despite having used the same route home a number of times before a certain incident happened. There were other options, after all; some more convenient than others. Such as the city's bus system, or having her agent drive her home.
Of course, most people didn't have a Guardian telling them that they needed to look into something. Phoenix had started urging her to head there as soon as Shion finished up at the agency, like it had been something that it had been wanting for a while. Strange. Phoenix didn't seem to be the type to hold something back.
[There, do you SEE it?]
The teen paused, looking around from where she stood at the pavement. The streets were quiet, as expected for this time of the night. There were a handful of apartment buildings in the area, and people tended to mind their own business -- to the point of ignoring someone crying out for help, apparently. No, Shion wasn't done being outraged by that.
"I'm not sure what I'm supposed to look for, exactly. The fog?" It didn't look natural. It didn't feel natural. Initially it was at the far side of the road but it crept closer, faster than it had any right to, and soon it was all Shion could see. Anxiety began to seep in, and she resisted the urge to close her eyes.
[KEEP CALM. This will pass soon.]
"That's not really something I want to hear from you." Shion murmured, tentatively taking a few steps forward, keeping her feet in contact with the ground. Something about staying still in the dense fog felt wrong. However, Phoenix was right; while the fog didn't completely vanish, most of it seemed to settle in a thick layer over the pavement. At least now she could see something...
Shion blinked hard. It didn't make sense at all; she couldn't have moved that far in the tiny steps she'd taken. Shion was supposed to still be on the same street she'd been when the fog rolled in, and in some ways she was, only if the layout were to be considered. The collection of small and mid-rise apartment buildings were gone, and in their place were what looked to be tall buildings, windowless and made out of black stone. A fence that should have been across the street was now a wall, fortress-like with the same oily black material. And the lampposts? They weren't around.
"This - This is what you wanted to look into? The news said that there's been a lot of fog lately..." Her voice floated out, magnified in the surroundings' unnatural silence. Heart racing and feeling lost, Shion was thankful that she wasn't alone, not really. Even though she wouldn't be there in the first place if not directed to by the same Guardian.
Walking in this kind of darkness seemed like asking for trouble. She reached into her schoolbag and pulled out her phone. Pleased that it was working -- she half expected it not to; just like in movies -- Shion turned on the flashlight, illuminating the 'building' closest to her.
[This distortion is a hazard and MUST BE ELIMINATED. Come, this is a challenge we will undertake.] At least one of them sounded confident. In the previous weeks, the Guardian had taught Shion a few things, but she wondered if it would be enough for this challenge, whatever kind of task it entailed.
If it wasn't, she hoped it had an exit plan.

"Huh-?" "Thank you." Ringo bowed politely. As he was handed his part-time pay. He pocketed the envelope away as he started to head on back to his apartment. He had about an hour or two to do his homework by the time he got back. Even if the only things he has to do is the required classes back at his college.
A sigh escaped Ringo as he walked. What major...what major. He was still in his second year but it won't be long until his third. What was he going to do? Not to mention his reputation. Not a lot are willing to talk to him. They leave him be, not ask questions, but none the less. Another sigh. I couldn't just do nothing
"Hm?" Ringo stopped as he glanced over at an odd amount of fog. He glanced down to his outfit. Just thin black long sleeves and jeans...then why isn't he more chilly? That concern had to be tabled for now though. He saw someone enter inside! "Wai-!" Ringo dashed on after her.
Ringo skidded to a stop as he glanced around his surroundings. W-weren't there supposed to be apartment buildings around here? Forget about that, he had to guide her out of the fog. There she was, a girl with black hair and twin tails.

Shion didn't think that anyone would follow her in -- she hadn't exactly taken pains to conceal herself, but it was late in the day and there hadn't been anyone around before she got onto that street. Kind of like the situation that ended with her stabbed. But that was a comparison for another time.
The girl turned on her heel towards the caller, phone-flashlight lowered slightly so that the beam wasn't trying to blind him. Being called 'Oi' wasn't really something she was accustomed to, but would gladly ignore it in light of the more important situation she was in.
Oh, Shion had more than heard about the danger in these parts. It didn't seem like he was referring just to the Sanyo streets at night, was he? "Thank you for your concern, Mister," she started, bowing slightly. "You should take care as well. Are you..." She took a cursory glance around. "Do you live in one of the apartments that are supposed to be here?"
[Our investigation should be discrete, Shion. There is no need to involve anyone else.]
[Agreed, but it doesn't seem right or safe to just leave him here.] She was still having was some difficulty communicating with Phoenix without speaking out loud. Most of her previous attempts were incomprehensible to her Guardian, as disjointed and fleeting as thoughts tended to be. There was a degree of concentration involved, an effort to form a complete thought. Phoenix assured her that it was going to get easier the more they attuned to each other, but the struggle will have to do until then.
"It might be better if you go back the way you came from, for now." Shion flashed him one of her charming smiles, trying to give the man some kind of impression that maybe Shion knew what she was doing, despite the cold sweat that had started to trickle down her back. Or that leaving whatever this place was could just be as simple as backtracking.

"Huh-?" "Thank you for your concern, Mister," She bowed. Awfully...calm in such a place wasn't she? "You should take care as well. Are you..." She looked around."Do you live in one of the apartments that are supposed to be here?" Ringo scratched the back of his head.
"Not really but that isn't the point..."
"It might be better if you go back the way you came from, for now." Her smile completely betrayed the environment they were in. Ringo, however, asked a very simple if not oblivious question on his part considering she already answered such a question.
"Wait, what about you? The fog is said to be dangerous not to mention somethings going o-." Ringo blinked as he heard movement. "...stay behind me." Ringo stepped on forward as he glanced around. He prayed it was just a stray cat or dog... Tagged: SHION AMANOMIYA Music: Strange Atmosphere from the Persona 1 OSTNotes: Feel free to add in the shadow encounter here!

They were wasting time, just standing around here trying to negotiate getting each other out. Shion sighed internally. It didn't seem like the man knew anything about this place aside that it was dangerous, and well, that detail was something she had already been aware of. Not just because Phoenix said so, or the rather upsetting appearance of the area, there was something inherently wrong about the place that was giving the girl a disquieting feeling that they were very unwelcome.
[Do not be afraid. I am with you.]
[Fear's not quite what I'd use to describe it, Phoenix, not entirely. But your assurance is appreciated.] Shion mused. [Unfortunately, having someone else around makes things... complicated.] There was the possibility that he'd come here because he saw the fog engulf her, judging from what he first said. In which case Shion would feel terrible if something bad happened to him.
Maybe it was because Shion was only too aware of the odd stillness their current environment held, but the noise that definitely didn't come from either of them wasn't easy to miss. Plus points for Mr. Valiant telling her to stay behind him and presumably let him protect her from whatever it was, but Shion stepped up beside him. "Your offer is appreciated," She didn't show him that smile again, attention focused on the direction the noise came from, "But I am here on purpose. Perhaps you can tell me more about what's been going on--"
[-- They're coming, Shion. Remember what I've --]
"-- after we get out of here." She finished, deciding that for now it might be better to stay together with him. God knows where he might go off to if left to his own devices. If he'd even leave at all.
The slithering noise came again, this time louder, nearer. Soon, the source revealed themselves when they were close enough that they came into the edge of the flashlight's beam. Four large black and white orbs were floating over the foggy ground, each with lips and teeth parted for a large black tongue protruding out.
With mixed shock and disgust, Shion drew in a deep shaky breath and took a few more small steps forward. She spared the red-haired man another glance. "This will probably be a little rough, but if something happens, please run away, okay?"

"Oh...this isn't good." "Your offer is appreciated,"
"Huh?" Ringo glanced his side as the girl walked up to it.
"But I am here on purpose. Perhaps you can tell me more about what's been going on after we get out of here." As she pointed her flash light over, there were...what Ringo can only describe to be floating spheres with mouths. It had to take about a second or so for Ringo to process the situation for him to finally register that he might've wandered into something potentially dangerous here. "This will probably be a little rough, but if something happens, please run away, okay?" Ringo blinked as he watched her walk forward.
"Not without you." Ringo grabbed the girl's wrist and started to try to make a run for it.He wasn't sure the speed of monster spheres but to stay where they were is not a good idea at the moment. One minute, Shion was readying herself to face what was presumably part of the challenge Phoenix had mentioned. The next, she quite nearly dropped her phone when the stranger grabbed her before she could process what he had said. "What in the--!!"
What was it with strange men thinking they could just grab her?
Not given much of a chance to react otherwise, Shion ran with him, if only to stop herself from stumbling and getting dragged along. She wasn't too onboard with Phoenix's hot-blooded stand your ground stance anyway, but running away and deeper into this place wasn't exactly what she had in mind. Oddly enough, the street layout was similar to what existed in Sanyo and black windowless structures aside, it wasn't too hard to tell where they were passing through. When they've ran for some distance, a quick peek behind her told that those spheres didn't seem to have followed them.
"Hey, listen, mister!" Shion slowed down, resisting getting pulled forward along with the man and trying to pull her wrist back. Eventually she came to a full stop, refusing to run an inch more or let the man take her somewhere else. "Those things aren't behind us anymore, and I think we've ran far enough. Let me go." She paused for breath before adding, "Please."
[We should have stayed and fought the shadows, Shion.]
[Wasn't my choice. And please don't tell me we have to go back there now.]
[Not yet, for now. It's not wise to involve innocent people in our attempts.]
Not yet. Oh, heck. Deciding to deal with the issue right in front of her first, Shion swung her phone to shine the light on her unintended companion. "Now I did tell you I was here on purpose. Could tell me who you are and why you're here?"

"Sorry...." Ringo continued to run, even turned a corner or two. He was pretty sure they could just fly around but it was better than going in a straight line where they could predict. He skidded to a stop but not of his own will. It seemed the girl was not entertained by how forceful he was.
"Hey, listen, mister!" He let go right away as she flashed the light of her phone on him. "Those things aren't behind us anymore, and I think we've ran far enough. Let me go. Please."
"Sorry..."
"Now I did tell you I was here on purpose. Could tell me who you are and why you're here?" Ringo pointed to himself and tilted his head. Honestly he should be asking her that question but alas, she did ask first.
"I'm Ringo Shiro." He gave her space. He didn't offer a hand not so much out of rudeness but because he was sure she didn't like being pulled by him. Ringo settled with a wave instead. "I'm just a nearby college student. I'm here to guide you out...wherever we are." Ringo pondered. Come to think of it, he ran toward where he was sure was the way out but they don't seem to be there yet. It seems like they haven't progressed at all if anything. "...may I ask what are you doing here?" She went in here willingly. Maybe if he helped her out with whatever she came here for, she'd leave sooner.

Finally, a name for the face. He did look kind of too young to be called 'mister'. Unfortunately, Shion's worries were confirmed, when he stated his reason for being there. Even though she never asked for help, it was her fault that the college student was there.
"It would have been nice if you were around a few weeks back." She remarked, lowering her phone just a bit. His returned question had been expected, although she noted that he didn't ask for her name. That makes things easier, doesn't it? Until he sees a Trandy ad or something. "You've probably heard that people have gone missing around town, right? Then when some of them get found they're... ah, somewhat less of their usual selves." Shion didn't personally know anyone who had disappeared, but that didn't mean she should have gone on with her life without paying notice.
"A little bird told me that these... areas might be involved." A small smile flitted across her face as Phoenix uttered a protest at being called 'little'. "So I'm investigating. I'd tell the police, but I think you see why it wouldn't be such a good idea, right?"
[Did I not emphasize that we weren't going to involve innocent lives in our investigation?] [He doesn't seem willing to leave without me, and we're not even sure if he can leave at all. So he's our responsibility for the time being. We just have to keep him safe, and then once this is over, he's free to think of this as a dream. Or a nightmare.] [Or inform other people about all this. I would think you'd be more concerned, seeing that your work requires public approval.] [It's not that I'm not worried, but if someone told--] Shion cut herself off, sighting sudden movement.
While Phoenix and Shion conversed privately, their attentions weren't on their impromptu companion. Neither were they on the spheres that had somehow managed to catch up. Two of them bounced along threateningly to the older boy's direction. The other two went for the distracted Guardian User, managing to get between her and the college student.
"Shiro-san, are you alright over there?!" The conversation between Phoenix and her was temporarily set aside in favor of doing what Phoenix said they should have done earlier. The shift wasn't too sudden, but Shion's appearance changed. Her dark hair lightened in hue, and blue irises darkened to red. A crimson mantle trimmed in gold seemed to float down out of nowhere and settled over the girl's shoulders as she glanced around the spheres, trying to see if there was a way to go over to Ringo's side.

"..." "It would have been nice if you were around a few weeks back."
"Huh?"
"You've probably heard that people have gone missing around town, right? Then when some of them get found they're... ah, somewhat less of their usual selves." Ringo did hear the occasional news report and glanced an article about it on occasion but what did this place have to do with i-actually, silly question considering the flying jaws the two just encountered earlier. "A little bird told me that these... areas might be involved." Ringo tilted his head at the girl's smile. "So I'm investigating. I'd tell the police, but I think you see why it wouldn't be such a good idea, right?"
"Yeah..." Ringo said. His thoughts on that would have to be put aside as during their discussion the flying jaws caught up, one zipped inbetween the two to separate them. "Gh-!" Ringo began to try to reach for the girl again but this time two of them rushed in front of him while the other two went after her.
"Shiro-san, are you alright over there?!"
"I'm fine just wa-!" Ringo was tackled by one of the spheres. He winced as the impact did more to him than he expected but he tried to charge again...against his better wisdom. The second one lashed its tongue out and slammed Ringo away.
He collapsed on the ground. It was not graceful at all and definitely wasn't a soft landing. His body was in pain and he might've broken something but he wasn't clear as to what. His vision blurred as he tried to collect his faculties. The jaws were about to bite down on Ringo before they turned their attention back toward the girl. They started to join the other two jaws.
"Wai-!" Ringo wasn't sure what the point was to call out to something that had no ears but then...
"They won't heed your pleas." He heard his own voice.
"Wh-?"
"They won't heed your pleas...you cannot negotiate with them. You cannot peaceful resolve this with 'laws' or 'values'." Ringo clenched his fists. "...will you give up like you did then? Like those that gave up then? Let some convenience deal away with it?" He forced his body up.
"No..."
"Then take aim! You target is all the evil in the world! All you need is to pull the trigger!!" Ringo's vision cleared as a white mask with red eye covers appeared over his face. Without hesitation he dug his nails into the mask enough to crack it and give him a grip on it. Ringo let out a scream as he ripped the mask to pieces. The pieces became flames that formed into a black cloaked figure. He raised his index finger like a gun.
"Thou art I, I art thou!" Ringo and the figure spoke in unison. With a 'pang' motion, a black metal arrow shot through one of the jaws, reducing it to dust."Robin Hood!!" A white metal gun appeared in Ringo's hand as the mask began to reform on his face. He was ready to fight them.

It didn't look like rejoining the young man was an option at the moment. Shion couldn't even see what was going on on that side, but with the two spheres in front of her she didn't have the luxury of even attempting to look closer.
[Shion, you really have to stay and fight the Shadows this time.]
"I know." She replied shortly, slowly backing away from the advancing orbs, keeping her distance from them. The last thing she needed was an I-told-you-so from Phoenix right now. But it was right -- she should have stayed and fought instead of running, and if she had only done that then they wouldn't be dealing with those things -- Shadows, Phoenix called them -- right now. Now whether Shion could actually defeat them was questionable.
[You're shaking. Stop moving back, you're going to get cornered, not to mention we're getting farther away from the bystander.] Yes, thank you Phoenix for pointing it out. Even though her legs felt weak, Shion stopped moving back, just in time to see the other two spheres join in a united front against her. What about Shiro--?!
One of the spheres started bouncing more vigorously, then out from it shot a ball of flame towards the red-cloaked girl. Not having reacted quickly, Shion tried to pull her mantle around her and twist her body away, but took the full brunt of the fireball. The scent of singed fabric was in the air and the girl almost toppled to the ground, but, oddly enough, found that it didn't nearly hurt as much as she thought it would have.
However, the minor injury seemed to awaken something from within her. It didn't quite resemble anger, but it was just as forceful. "Back off!" She snarled at the spheres, whipping her cloak back. A wave of fire washed over the quartet of disgusting teeth and tongues -- although the last one seemed to dissolve into nothingness just before the flames reached it.
[... Interesting.] Phoenix remarked, and didn't elaborate if he was describing what just happened on Shion's side or something else. She paid it no mind, and only absently noted a glimpse of Ringo behind the spheres. Her attack seemed to have done as little damage to the three remaining Shadows as theirs had done to her. An adjustment in tactics was appropriate, then.
Shion wasn't trembling anymore.

"..." Ringo didn't need further instruction as he reached for his mask again. He gained the attention of the jaws. He started to step forward without regard to his danger. One of the jaws began to twitch and open its jaws to reach for a bite. It did not learn from what happened to its companion.
"Single Shot..." A name was called to allow the cloaked hero to appear before Ringo as he lifted the black metal crossbow mounted on his arm and let out another shot. The mouth had a hole through it and it collapsed into nothing. It was then everything started to catch up. The weariness and the situation began to catch up to him as his mask reappeared on his face. One of the remaining spheres shifted toward Ringo and slapped him away with a tongue.
Ringo started to get up. It wasn't as painful as the first time but it still wasn't exactly pleasant. He blinked as he felt his face. The adrenaline from earlier has more or less been beaten out of him as he processed that he had a mask on his face now. Alas such things have to be figured out later as he pitifully rolled out of the way of a giant bite. Ringo aimed and pulled the trigger on his gun...only to realize that it had the safety on.

With another of those Shadows dissipating into nothingness, Shion could see more of Ringo, and what had happened that Phoenix could have called 'interesting'. That a figure seemed to materialize around him looked like something out of a fantasy novel or movie, yet it's nature felt oddly similar to Phoenix.
However, ruminating on this further was better left for later. You know, when they weren't being threatened by bouncing balls that shoot fire. Loathe as she was to get nearer to their aggressors, she moved to get on the same side as the older boy. Her movements garnered the attention of the other sphere, which began bounding towards her and her path, brandishing its tongue in a swipe.
It connected. Shion didn't have time to express her mixed pain and revulsion at being struck by a giant tongue, barely able to break her tumble to the ground with an outstretched arm. As the girl tried to get back up as quickly as she could, she saw that the sphere was advancing towards her again, and that a few paces away the other remaining Shadow looked like it intended another bite at Ringo -- who seemed to be having issues with his weapon.
"Magaru!" Shion yelled, and the spheres moved erratically as if lashed by strong winds, before said winds seemed to cut into them and dispersed whatever matter they were made of. The unnatural stillness from when they first entered the space seemed to settle down over the area again like a blanket, like nothing had happened. Yet here Shion was, still alert and trying to regain her breath while tottering over to Ringo.
"A-Are you alright, Shiro-san?" What just happened to you and what did you do? was closer to the front of the queue of questions she had in her mind, but they'd just been in a fight. Shion might be a former delinquent, but her misconduct never really involved physically fighting for her life.
[We have to get out of here.] [But the investigation--] [Can wait later--] "I'm exhausted, and I'll probably die if we get into another fight with more of those things." Shion said that last part out loud, unable to keep focused enough to maintain speaking with Phoenix in her head.

"Phew, that was a close one..." Ringo glanced from his target to his gun as he realized why the trigger didn't pull back with his finger. His hesitancy was just what the flying sphere jaws needed as they began to lunge toward Ringo. Right as he clipped the safety off he raised the gun again...only to have them blown away by the wind. Rather, they were sliced by it given the pieces that fell before they faded.
"A-Are you alright, Shiro-san?" Ringo blinked.
"Why are you blonde now?" He lifted the mask from his face to double check that yes...she is blonde at the moment.
"I'm exhausted, and I'll probably die if we get into another fight with more of those things." Ringo nodded as he clipped the safety back on and placed the gun in his back pocket. Not the safest place to keep a gun but hey he didn't have a holster...actually speaking of which. Ringo took a moment to comprehend the mask on his forehead. He tapped it to make sure he wasn't just feeling things and no, it's still there.
"Let's get on out." Ringo offered a hand to guide her. She seemed exhausted.

"Huh?" The question took Shion by surprise. She blinked and glanced down at her hair and clothes, feeling rather self-conscious. She'd been marginally aware of the changes to her physical appearance, but there had been more urgent tasks at hand, like their possible deaths. "Oh, I suppose it's something similar to your mask." The mask's appearance seemed minimal compared to her freakin' transformation though.
The young lady took the offered hand, noting that at least he didn't look like he intended to yank her around this time. She did wonder what the point of holding hands was, if they were just going to get out of here, but chose to let it be. Whether he wanted some comfort or just wanted to hold a girl's hand, it was fine with Shion, given what they just went through.
Phoenix indicated that the exit wasn't too far away from where they were, and so Shion began walking towards its direction, keeping hold of the older boy's hand as long as he let her. "Phoenix said the exit's around two blocks this way." She spent several steps in silence, glancing around and staying vigilant for the smallest movement or noise that wasn't coming from them, before casting a glance at Ringo.
"I'm sure you have a lot of questions, but I probably don't have all the answers... Or any answers, for that matter. I'm kind of new to this myself, and wasn't really expecting that someone else could do that." Shion sighed. It wasn't like Phoenix was willing to provide her with all the information she wanted, apart from what it apparently thought she needed in order to do what it wanted -- which was way less than what Shion thought she needed. "I hope your Guardian's more willing to share information than mine, though. Robin Hood -- that's what you called yours back there, wasn't it?"
If what Ringo called forth was even a Guardian like Phoenix. It had felt similar to Phoenix, yet unmistakably different. It was probably the reason why her own usually-loud Guardian was temporarily reticent.
