As appropriate for her role as a respectable member of the school and her public image as a model, Shion manages to carry herself in a composed manner, despite her slight height of 5'3. Her body has some of the curves that adolescence promised, but looks like there's still some room to grow. She's not really what anyone would readily call athletic and isn't capable of great feats of strength or speed, but does move with good balance and control.
Her grandfather used to insist that she took after her father, but she really resembles her mother's features more with her pointy chin and blue eyes, and especially how lustrous and wavy their hair was. Shion keeps her hair long and usually arranged in twin tails, like a little practice of defiance to that time she had an involuntary haircut.
She wears her school uniform without much embellishment, but prefers go home and change her outfit first if she has appointments after school. Her wardrobe predominantly consists of western-style clothes, mostly pieces from the clothing brand she models for. Shion's casual clothes are usually some sort of shirt or blouse and a skirt or a dress. Trousers and shorts are somewhat rare on her, but she won't fuss if the situation requires it.
PersonalityLikes: Books, home-cooked meals, ghost stories, older men, nice clothes, most sweets
Dislikes: Spicy food, carrots, wasting resources, being manipulated, recurrent mistakes, nosy people
Hobbies: Reading books, baking, having tea,
drivingGoals: To take good care of her grandmother, do extremely well in school so that she can get into a great university, and to make a clean exit from the modeling industry without any negative effects to her grandmother's relationship with the agency.
Over the years, Shion has cultivated an image of a pleasant and polite -- perhaps a touch reserved -- young lady, heavily influenced by her years at the boarding school. The young lady is friendly to her peers, though one will rarely see her expend more than a token effort in befriending someone who has not extended a hand first. Those who become close to her would find that she tends to be sweet and affectionate, usually in the form of giving small gifts. The playfully sarcastic attitude lurking beneath the surface also becomes more visible and she speaks more bluntly, but quick to rein herself in if it starts hurting people. Another trait that becomes more apparent is that she gets easily attached to people. She's hardly the type to ask a person to change to suit her desires, but chances are if she's teasing them about their less likable qualities, she's already accepted said trait as part of the person.
Due to deep-seated feelings of inadequacy during her childhood, Shion has turned out to be something of an overachiever, making up for anything she perceives could potentially cause her to be bullied. It is important to her to be able to perform well in academics, extracurriculars, and work. A diligent worker, she enjoys the feeling of being busy and then accomplishing tasks, and while she tends not to hold any illusions about great success or renown as the product of her efforts, there is an expectation that her hard work should be met halfway by others. That said, Shion also believes that she has a lot of control over what she does with her life, and gets frustrated when unsuccessful at her endeavors or when forced to sit back and let someone else handle it.
Despite whatever personal details of hers have been made known as a side effect of her job, embracing a public life proves too troublesome for her and she vastly prefers to keep out of the limelight as much as possible. The lingering worry that her time as a delinquent would catch up to her is but one part of it, but it should be okay as she has no plans of continuing to model past her twenties. Now if she could just say that to her grandmother and the agency.
She's rather tolerant to petty offenses, but as with any other individual, Shion has limits that should not be crossed. Once she has been sufficiently offended, forgiveness would be extremely difficult to receive, nor is she likely to forget it.
HistoryShion was the firstborn daughter of Takehiko and Jillian Amanomiya. For a young couple who had difficulties having a child, that she was even born was a blessing, and they treated her as such. For the first few years of her life Shion was a bright and happy child, and her parents saw that she was provided every need and want -- and even then a little bit more.
However, it was not meant to last. Takehiko and Jillian have long hoped for a large and happy family, and for that to happen, they would need to have more children. Around the time Shion turned three, a visit to the doctor made it became quite apparent that the couple's dream was truly out of reach. Even though their daughter was a source of happiness for them, it could not fill the emptiness left by their disappointed hopes. As the years passed, the void grew larger and larger until it began to affect the couple's behavior towards each other. Although it wasn't either parent's fault, they blamed the other out of frustration. They fought often. Outwardly they maintained the guise of a happy family, but the smallest things one did ticked the other off, and an argument would erupt as soon as they got to somewhere private.
At first, they tried to keep it secret from Shion, but she soon became involved, with both parents demanding her to pick which parent she'd go with if/when they split, practically every time they fought. Shion withdrew into the safe world of studying, focusing on her grades and avoiding her parents. It was a good thing too, since she never had to see her father strike Jillian, nor did she ever hear Jillian threaten to leave with another man.
Shion was nine years old when she and her parents involved in a traffic accident that ended up with the family car falling off a bridge and into the river. A bystander jumped in and was able to pull Shion from the backseat, but it was too late for her parents who were sitting up front. They perished that fateful day, leaving Shion to the care of her paternal grandparents and necessitating a move to Sanyo.
Although Shion never regained her former energy for horsing around, she eventually recovered from the tragedy. Life somehow returned to being peaceful for Shion. Her grandparents raised her with a mixture of indulgence and discipline. It was then that Shion learned how to do chores around the house and get a start on managing a household. Academic excellence was still expected from her, and so she performed up to par.
But children can be so cruel. As a newcomer with no friends and one who lacked parents at that, Shion easily became a victim of bullying. Scrapes, bruises, small cuts, broken things -- all those she can hide from her grandparents or make excuses that she had fallen and so on, but there had been no other way to explain why she came home one afternoon in tears and with a large chunk of her previously-long hair missing. It took a lot of assurance from her grandparents before Shion finally spilled the beans about how she has been treated at school.
It was hard not to feel like she was being punished when Hokuto decided to ship her off to St. Bridget Academy for Young Ladies, a private boarding school. So that Shion can get a new start, he said. Sayuri didn't exactly protest or try to stop him, but she had misgivings about having her granddaughter away from her side.
St. Bridget's administration was strict, having gained a reputation of being a place to keep troubled young girls and hide away daughters. At St. Bridget, no one terrorized Shion or brought up the horrible memories. Her focus of maintaining good grades was still there, but her grandmother's fears weren't completely off the mark. A desire for belonging led Shion to becoming friends with a group of schoolmates, and later on some students from the neighbouring male-exclusive St. Andrews. Contact between schools were minimal outside of a few interschool events and the rare weekend off, but as Shion later found, there were ways around that.
At first it was just sneaking around the campus after hours, with the requisite lock picking, and underage drinking and smoking -- fun stuff to take them away from the daily humdrum of school life. It eventually escalated to sneaking out on weekends for underground racing parties with other individuals of means. That was all at night though; Shion didn't dare do those things too often nor speak openly, and was very careful not to get caught. However, one very close call was enough to scare her straight, resulting in her quitting the scene. It wasn't as if Shion was anything other than a good girl during the brief periods she was home for vacation, so it hadn't been too much of an effort to slide back into normalcy. Life at the boarding school became quiet and nurturing, both much needed, if not a little lonely due to the absence of family.
Near the end of her first year in high school, Sayuri sent for Shion, saying that Hokuto had passed away from a stroke. Shion returned to Sanyo immediately after the last of her exams to attend the funeral services for her grandfather, and stayed there to keep her lonely grandmother company. She transferred to Mishiro High as a second-year student after Futaba High turned their nose up at her St. Bridget credentials.
At first she was anxious about the whole thing, considering what had caused her to be sent to private school, but it was a decision made for her granny's sake. After her first week seemed to go well without a hitch, Shion was able to relax and carry on for the rest of the year normally. A lot of time had passed by, after all, and Shion didn't even remember a whole lot from back when she was still living in Sanyo full-time. It made her relieved to finally feel like she had an actual home and was living in it too, and adored her sweet, fluffy grandmother. She soon had a side job -- modelling for Trandy, a popular clothing line that caters to teens and young adults -- as a favour for her grandmother's friend.
Shortly before term started for her final year of high school, the complacency that had set over her backfired. Shion had gotten accustomed to living in Sanyo and wasn't worried about walking the streets late at night. On her way home from the agency one night, a man approached her to ask for an autograph... and her purse. After the young lady shakily complied with both requests, he made a grab for her. And that was when she tried to make a run for it. There was a brief struggle, then a small window of opportunity that she took to get free and fled, running several blocks before stopping. It seemed that the man did not give chase... But an itch she'd earlier felt on her abdomen sharpened to pain, and Shion looked down to see a spreading bloom of red.
Frantically looking for help took all of her remaining strength, to no avail. Finally, when it seemed like the clutches of life would release her, a being calling itself the Phoenix reached out and pulled her back, saying that the girl suited its purpose and thus would grace her with its flames. Shion accepted, and she was healed, appearing to suffer no consequences of blood loss.
It felt so surreal, to come so close to death then be saved by something supernatural, but Phoenix's presence never left her, the only remaining evidence of what had happened that night and the constant reminder that things were not the same anymore. Phoenix seemed interested in phenomenon in the city, so Shion supposes that her "purpose" is something related to that.
EquipmentPointer stick - Telescopic and 39 inches at full length, this pointer stick is slightly flexible and offers easy storage. It has helped Shion with various presentations at school; now it will help her protect herself. [Close-range, Strike Damage]
Memo notebook - Top bound, 3" x 5", 80 ruled sheets. In supernatural spaces, the pages become hard and razor sharp after being torn off from the spring, but so thin that they do not last for more than one use. [Long-range, Slash Damage]
Notes- The Amanomiya residence is a standalone two-storey bungalow in Sanyo-Sun's residential district. The land on which it stands on was inherited by Sayuri from her parents, and the house itself was built around when Takehiko was a teenager. It has a small herb garden outside, and the entire property is surrounded by a brick fence. The family is thankfully able to live comfortably, with Sayuri's income originating from a board member seat in their family-owned middle-market logistics company.
- Shion is set to receive her parents' inheritance when she turns of age. For now, she gets an allowance from her grandmother, and augments it with her earnings from her part time job.
