Admittedly, he had never been fishing before. Well, 'admittedly', he'd never done a lot of things before. Fishing though? He was not quite seeing the attraction yet. It was supposed to be a beloved past-time, a time-honored tradition, but staring at the water waiting for something to happen?
One of the guys he'd been hanging out with recently wouldn't stop talking up how much he loved this. Watching the water, feeling nature, that moment when all the patience and anticipation finally came to peak and left one bursting at the seams with exultation. ...That last bit might have been his own interpretation, but he was pretty sure he understood what the guy was trying to say. All that build-up waiting for euphoria? Listening to the man talk about it with that excitement in his eyes only led Julius to believe, without a doubt, he would absolutely love fishing, even if everything else about it seemed odd.
No, he just had to keep waiting right? The longer the wait, the greater the reward would be when he got that first nibble. For just an instant, he was near to quivering with anticipation. Nodding to himself, he straightened his posture a little, taking in a deep, steadying breath.
If nothing else, it'd probably be in his best interests to recast the line. Reeling it back in the way the shopkeep had shown him, he really couldn't be sure of what he was possibly doing wrong - if anything. Two other guys fishing along the bridge were having varying degrees of their own luck, all of which was infinitely better than his own.
Maybe it was... those little wriggly things they kept putting on the hooks?
Squinting a little, he watched carefully as one of the fishermen looped the thing onto his hook before casting his line... before slowly looking to his own bare hook held between his fingers.
Notes: ..........beware the thot, you all said.

The clothes make the man, alright, and anyone who says otherwise is shopping at the wrong damn place. Lewis habitually slid his new jacket off and on as he walked; it fit perfectly and looked better. He'd spent most of his day shopping, getting ready for class (meaning getting ready to look memorably great on first impression - and I guess a notebook and a few pencils too, why not). Some form-fitting shirts and pants to match, and to top off his look, a set of expensive headphones to drape around his neck everywhere he went. Whether he liked school here or not (he wouldn't), he was going to leave everyone in no doubt that he was, in fact, hot shit.
It was a little weird, actually. He felt like he should be more anxious about starting school in a completely different place with a completely different system, but he just had this decisive feeling that when it came to it, he was gonna feel like a million bucks and he wouldn't take any shit from anyone. It was a strange sort of confidence with a totally unknown origin, but he welcomed it all the same.
As he left the commercial districts and came to the bridge, the sun began to drop, and the sunlight hit the river like a million glittering scales. He wasn't pleased to be here, but it was a damn good view. If he hustled, he'd be back in his room for nightfall. If not, it wasn't a really big deal, now was it?
There were a few fishermen on the bridge. Now there was a pastime he would never understand. On one of his few bonding excursions with his father, after he got guilty about spending most of his son's childhood sealing contracts in another hemisphere, they went fishing. He felt a little bad for his dad, actually, because it soon became pretty evident that he didn't much like it either. Maybe his dad used to make him go fishing, or maybe he just thought of it as a stereotypical male bonding activity? At any rate, after they had sat in the sun for a while bored out of their minds, he apologetically said, 'Son, I'm sorry, this is a lot more enjoyable when you're drunk'.
But it looked like they weren't as hopeless as some. One fellow he walked past, another foreigner, apparently (not so rare around here after all; it was a business hub, after all), was apparently trying to fish with just the bare hook. He tried and failed to suppress a snicker. "Think some bait would help with that, fella." he mumbled as he walked past (who knew if the guy spoke English? Well, it didn't really matter, he supposed).

Julius’s gaze ran over the well-dressed young man who seemed to have been speaking to him… or, at least, at him. He may not have been fluent in English, or… even passably decent at long conversation, but he had a few friends who were far more skilled and seemed to take great pleasure in teaching him. Almost as much pleasure as he took in learning, but both seemingly paled in compare to the pleasure they took when he put the tongue to use.
Here nor there though, he half-turned with a sheepish grin. “Sorry? Could you repeat that…?” His voice was inquiring and deceptively soft. Despite his pronunciation being solid enough, there was a stiffness in conversational English; pillow talk was more his forte. It helped most of all if he could see the other person speaking, reading their lips along with what they were saying helped the words click into place better.
Fishing was almost completely forgot by this point, despite his hands carefully looping the hook through the line to keep it from dangling around. He did so with a peculiar deftness for someone who’d never been fishing before - and whose attention was fully on the foreigner. He may not have known much about… a lot of things, actually, but he was damn certain people were far more interesting and entertaining than fish. Certainly better conversational partners, and while he had learned full well not every person on the road was willing to stop and chat with a stranger, you ‘missed every shot you didn’t take’.
“Slowly… please.” His words were smoother that time, just a bit more natural on his tongue as his grin shifted from sheepish, to something markedly more wolfish.

When the guy replied first, he thought he was being a smartass and planned to ignore him. "Don't worry, you'll figure it out," he idly called back over his shoulder as he started to walk away. His mind started to wander back to normal thoughts - what would he get for dinner tonight? These banalities were suddenly interrupted - the guy knew English (albeit a bit stilted); truth be told, he did feel a little bad about just walking away from someone who might be genuinely confused. But in any event, whoever he was speaking to wasn't done yet, evidently.
He turned back to see the guy was now totally on him. This guy wasn't thinking about fishing anymore (actually, he was done, which was a little disconcerting). His attention had totally shifted to Lewis now, and from that focus the teenager could discern what he didn't see when the guy was fishing: this was not the sort of person you wanted to get into a fight with. He was a big guy, and he was smiling in that distinctly-discomforting way, the kind of smile where a guy knows something you don't, the kind of smile that makes you feel like someone's driving a corkscrew down your spine. He sort of gave off a dark sort of feeling. Or maybe that was just the grin speaking.
So the natural thing to do was piss him off. "I said you need bait to catch a fuckin' fish." Now he started speaking slowly, as requested: "What is your fucking problem, man? Lewis replied (and it was kind of a genuine question) in English once again - with a raised eyebrow and confusion flashing across his face.

His eyebrows lifted in genuine surprise, his hawk-like focus seemingly broken and settling into something a little more benign - even a little sheepish. While he may not have in any way been remotely fluent, he was at least pretty decent at reading a mood. Usually. That wasn't, however, saying he always knew the correct ways on how to respond to such moods.
At the very least, the young man was talking slow enough that he could follow. Slowly, he tilted his head to one side, looking too much like a curious dog for such a visually imposing guy. "My, uh... fucking problem..." he said with a laugh, and a way-too-friendly smile to be flashing around in response to the escalating 'conversation', "is that I... can't catch any fucking fish."
Again he spoke in slow, measured English, and for the most part, any vitriol the kid was spitting off seemed to go right over his head. It wasn't as if he had never tried talking to someone who responded... less-than-kindly before. More than anything, he was amused by the increasing frequency of the word 'fuck'.
"But fishing has been..." he hummed to himself, trying to find the world, mumbling a little in Japanese under his breath until he came to it. "Dull?" His eyes narrowed a little, his smile thinning as he spoke in Japanese this time - smooth, slow, and hinging on seductive. "But then you came by, and I feel like I've snapped back to my senses... I bet I could have a lot of fun with you."

Nothing about the man made sense. He was cycling between looking threatening to backing off, then to bouncing to friendly curiosity - and for another thing, he seemed to take everything literally. It took Lewis a little while to get a finger on what, exactly, this guy meant and why he was acting like such a fucking oddball. More than anything, it seemed like this dude found Lewis's attempts to get a rise out of him funny. Which, naturally, tended to piss him off. His hands instinctively formed fists. Now it wasn't a matter of talking back to some weirdo with no conception of personal space - yeah, alright, this guy was definitely fucking with him. A voice in the back of his head, a tiny manifestation of reason, valiantly tried to remind him that this guy looked like he break Lewis in half with one arm, and that it probably wasn't a good idea to spend first few months of school in traction, or to start off with a fight in public on his record. The odds were against it, because when someone made fun of him, Lewis was the kind of guy to either roll up into a ball or get blind with anger and right now it looked like the second one was the likely outcome - hold up, what did he just say?Lewis took a long second to run the statement through his head again. He must have misunderstood, but he couldn't figure out where. Bewildered, frowning, absolutely baffled and embarrassed, he held up his hands and stammered (in Japanese): "Waitwaitwaitwaitwait, okay, u-uh... you ARE talking about beating me up, right? Like a fight?"
