We Shouldn't Watch This Movie So Close to Sundown (Kei) - Posted Apr 21, 2018 15:25:48 GMT -7

Yukari had a knack for making friends and picking out folks who might have needed a helping hand in that regard, and she'd been happy to meet and befriend a foreign student named Kei Muramoto. Muramoto was only a first year so really the only reason they'd met was because Yukari had introduced herself to the new faces on the track team when they held their first meeting! Everyone had been very friendly, but Muramoto in particular seemed like the lonely type. So...
The two started hanging out! Muramoto-san was from Canada all the way across the sea, America's hat as her late mother had called it. Her Japanese was surprisingly good for a foreigner, even if she had an odd accent to it, and even though she seemed a little bit awkward she was very nice. Yukari was glad she'd been able to meet her; hopefully her popularity helped give Kei a little boost and make some more friends!
Today was Friday, no track after school and photography club had adjourned early due to the club head being sick, the sun was still bright in the afternoon sky and there was plenty of time to make her way to the mall and see how her old man was doing at the coffee shop. Maybe catch a movie too! There were some horror films on this weekend that... well, she wasn't SUPER in to but she couldn't stay away. It was supposed to be a really good movie, expertly shot and filmed and edited...
Yukari had her school jacket tied off at her waist, buttons on her shirt collar clinking as she hummed a song stuck in her head, a spring in her step as she entered the mall. The theater was just across from the coffee shop, and wouldn't you know her new friend was there looking up at the marquee with an intense look! Muramoto must have been deciding on a movie.
"Oh, hey Muramoto-san! Picking out a movie? I heard there's a really good horror movie playing this weekend. Gekkoukan Silence, yep, there it is! I don't really like scary stuff, but I'm going to see it anyways. They say it's 'too good to miss' on my favorite sites. I don't think it starts until later though..." Yukari said in greeting, stopping by Kei and looking up at the marquee herself, reaching up with to play with one of the buttons on her blouse idly. "... So, you're just out by yourself?"

Kei squinted up at the marquee, watching the movie titles as they came and went. She didn't recognize many of them, and was starting to wonder if she should leave and come back another day. She wasn't sure if she wanted to take a gamble and just see a movie at random -- what if it ended up being something like a romance or a comedy? Sure, she'd have fun, but at the end of the day Kei would still rather watch a horror movie. Or a thriller, or even an action movie.
...But, she was really hoping for a horror movie.
Sighing, she frowned and looked harder at the marquee, as if doing so would somehow make it reveal what each movie was about. She stood there for another minute before sighing again. It was no use -- she may as well just go home, look up the movies online and then come back tomorrow.
Before she could leave, a combination of movement and a familiar voice caught Kei's attention. Turning her head, she looked to see Yukari approaching, looking chipper as usual. She smiled and waved at her upperclassman. Kei hadn't known Yukari for long, but she seemed like a very nice person. Very friendly and warm, and just easy to get along with. ...Which made it a bit more nerve-wracking to be around her. Kei was very aware that she had no filter, and desperately wanted to avoid saying anything that might scare Yukari off. She'd already bumbled her way through a few conversations, although she was hoping that maybe, just maybe, this one could go smoothly.
"Hey, Hamada-senpai!" She greeted, and inwardly cringed because oh man, was that too enthusiastic? ...Or was it not enthusiastic enough? Maybe it had -- no, nope, no -- shut up, inner-Kei. She wasn't going to get work herself up when she was only two words into a conversation. She wasn't. That would be stupid. She did start fidgeting though, repeatedly tapping her fingers to her thumb. Kei was, at the moment, not even aware she was doing it.
Still smiling, and doing her best to ignore her silly, inaccurate thoughts, Kei nodded in response to Yukari's question. She didn't get a chance to sneak a word in edge-wise, with Yukari continuing on about a horror movie. Score! Kei's eyes lit up, and she clapped her hands together. "Oh, horror movies are the best! D'you know if this one's more a psychological horror, or a slasher, or paranormal...?" She asked, trailing off at the end as she tried -- and failed -- to remember all the sub-types of the genre. Despite not knowing all the names, though, Kei loved them all equally -- if only because she just wanted a good scare, and nothing more.
"Hm? Oh, yeah, I'm here alone," Kei nodded again. "I finally didn't have anything to do at home, so I figured I'd come and check out the mall! ...Then I got distracted by the movie theatre." Kei's smile turned into a sheepish grin. She'd maybe seen a tenth of the mall before she stumbled across the theatre and decided hey, now was as good a time as ever to watch a movie! And it would have been, provided she'd known what was playing.
But, hey, she did now, thanks to Yukari. Kei wondered if it would be weird to ask if they could watch the movie together. They hadn't known each other long and weren't particularly close but... Surely this wouldn't over-stepping any bounds, right? There was nothing wrong with one friendly acquaintance asking another if they could sit next to each other in a movie theatre. ...Right? ...Right. Okay. Deep breaths. ...Except maybe not because then Yukari might notice and make a comment and really, who starts breathing deep in the middle of a mall? That's a weird thing to do, not seeing movies with a pal and --
"Hey, senpai, d'you wanna see Gekkoukan Silence together?"

Muramoto greeted her warmly and Yukari gave he a smile in return, pulling her eyes away from the marquee long enough to make eye contact too. She looked kinda nervous. But they were still new friends, with one of them being foreign no less... maybe that was just a Canad thing? She looked back up at the marquee to see the showing times of the movies, spying a comedy and a romance that she'd just missed the start of. Boo.
And Kei got really fired up over the horror movie thing! Yukari turned to face her and give the other girl her full attention and could tell how much that animated her! "Wow, You're fired up about scary movies huh? Hehe! I'm a fan of romance movies. Two star-crossed people learning to love each other..." Yukari sighed dreamily. What were they talking about? Oh yeah, what kind of horror movie. "Uh... but I think it's a thriller... paranormal... stuff? I dunno, I haven't really watched any trailers. They always show all the good parts of the movie before you get to see it."
She let Kei answer about having come alone to the theater. It sounded like she had a busy home life. She wondered what all that was about, but she didn't wanna pry. And then Kei looked like she was on the verge of saying something else, so Yukari waited... and there it was! Yukari smiled at Kei and said, "Sure! I was about to ask you if you wanted to. Seeing movies by yourself isn't as fun as going with a friend. It's not supposed to start for awhile though, so... Do you still wanna check out Bubble? Come on, I'll show you some places I like! I know the best accessory shop in town! And I can show you where my dad works, the coffee shop is just down this way. Let's go!" Yukari led the way as they walked, chattering at her younger friend and waving to a passing friend of hers with her boyfriend.
"I come here all the time just to hang out and look around! They have everything here. What kinds of stores are you in to Muramoto-san? I'm all about fashion and camera stuff. Oh, and movies! I really love romances and comedies."

Kei breathed a silent sigh of relief and grinned when Yukari said they could watch the movie together. Hurray! Now she got to spend more time with Yukari and see a horror movie! Today was really shaping up to be a good one.
"Sure!" Kei nodded enthusiastically at Yukari's suggestion to go check out the rest of the Bubble, and she fell in-step beside her as they started to walk... Somewhere. Kei wasn't sure where they were going, but was more than happy to just follow along. "So you're a romantic eh, senpai?" She grinned, somewhat amused by it -- it was... Cute? No, that sounded condescending. It just -- fit, she supposed. "Romance movies can be fun. But horror movies will always be my favourite. Nothing's better than getting scared senseless. "
Kei hummed at Yukari's question, trying to think of what her favourite stores would be. She didn't shop often, but... "I think I like music stores the most. Especially the ones with cool guitars! Sometimes they'll even let you pick one up and play it." She hoped the stores in Japan did the same thing. Kei had "accidentally" misplaced more than one guitar pick to have an excuse to venture out to the shops and check out those kickass, super-cool guitars. Playing them made her feel like a rockstar, and she'd be lying if she said she wasn't dreaming of the day where she could own one a guitar that awesome.
"I guess beyond that it's just game stores and bookstores. Nothing as exciting as fashion or cameras," She smiled, and then looked at Yukari curiously. "So are you into photography then, senpai? Or film?" Kei was willing to bet that Yukari was interested in film, at the very least. She'd mentioned that horror movies weren't her thing, but was here to see Gekkoukan Silence anyway -- it was "too good to miss". The only people Kei knew of who did that sort of thing were movie buffs, and if Yukari liked cameras, well... Even Kei could put two and two together on this one.

Yukari kept a fairly high pace even when she was walking, a side effect of having been a track student for so long, but the taller Muramoto had no problems keeping pace. She was even talking at the same time! She had a comment about her being a romantic and the second year nodded, gesturing to the many people wandering the Bubble nearby.
"Yep, I am! I think there's a knight in shining armor for every sweet princess. I mean... it's... not really like that, but it's a nice thought isn't it? ... ugh. Hasn't worked out so great for me so far though," Yukari replied, not doing a good job of hiding her disappointment at herself. It wasn't like she hadn't had a boyfriend before or anything, but it'd be nice if something would work out!
She almost missed that she was leaving Kei hanging. Muramoto had already answered on her favorite shops. Music stores, video games and book stores. Cool, so they had a couple things in common! She jumped back in like she hadn't distracted herself, stopping at the staircase to the second floor, across from which sat her dad's coffee shop. It was bustling with customers, student and adult. "Oh, yeah, I'm always impressed by people who can play instruments! I'm no good at it. I think there's one across from Ito Books, I've never been in it though. I can show you where the arcade is too, it's downstairs though. My dad owns this coffee shop too; if you ever need something to pick you up after school he's got the best hot and cold brews in town!"
Yukari gestured to the coffee shop when she talked about it and cast her gaze around to see if anybody worth talking to was hanging around. None she could see...
With a shrug she started off towards it, she was gonna feel sluggish halfway through the movie if she didn't. Kei would hopefully follow, and despite how busy they were the shop still had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. "Actually I'm a big film buff, but it's really closely related to photography. If you can't take a good picture you're never going to get a good shot in motion, you know? I'll watch anything well shot. I'm actually not a big fan of scary movies... but I heard this one is supposed to be great, so I can't miss it. Um, get what you want Muramoto, I'll pay for it this time since we're in my dad's place. They have a lot of stuff, so don't take too long or we won't have time to walk around before the movie!"
Yeah, that was fine, Yukari thought to herself after checking her wallet. She had enough to cover the first year too, no problem. Besides, it was just money. She'd make more next time she came in to work for her dad or up at the bookstore. She waited with her freshly made iced vanilla drink for Kei to make her decision before asking; "So where do you wanna check out first? I think I know where that music store is, but I definitely know where the arcade and my favorite book store is. There's a lot of other places out here too, I'm sure we'll find something neat at one of them."

"It is a nice thought," Kei agreed, "And hey, I'm sure your knight's just waiting for the perfect time to make his entrance." She wasn't just saying that to be nice, either; Kei was certain that, given time, Yukari would find the perfect guy. She seemed like too good a person to end up with someone who didn't deserve her... And too strong of a person, too. Kei may not have known Yukari very well yet, but she didn't seem like the type who'd just take things lying down.
She shrugged when Yukari mentioned her lack of musical talent. "Eh, I'll be honest, I wasn't so good when I first started either. Just takes a bit of practice, is all." And dedication, and liking the instrument you played, and -- well, a bunch of other things that Kei wasn't going to bother to list. She didn't want to bog down the conversation with all that silly nonsense!
She nodded along as Yukari talked about the other shops in the mall, and where some of them were. The Bubble certainly was big, though Kei supposed she should have expected it -- any city like Sanyo was bound to have a sizable mall. She stuck beside Yukari as the other girl headed toward the coffee shop. It smelled heavenly in there -- a mix of fresh coffee and vanilla and baked goods -- and the atmosphere was warm, cozy... It wasn't hard to see why the place was so popular with customers.
"That makes sense," she nodded again as Yukari started talking about film and photography. "You must see a lot of different movies -- that's gotta be pretty cool! So what makes a movie 'well shot'?" Kei, who'd never held a camera in her life, had no idea what counted as good cinematography. Heck, she hadn't even considered what made for a well-shot movie before this very moment. Kei was simple, and always just looked for the scares -- the scarier the movie, the more she liked it.
Kei's thoughts ground to a sudden stop when Yukari offered to buy her something from the cafe. For just a second, just one short second, she looked at Yukari as though the girl had grown a second head. The gesture was so unexpected, so kind, and Kei couldn't help but wonder where the joke was, what the catch was...
...And then she mentally kicked herself. What did it say about her, that she was ready to assume the worst of someone who'd proven to be nothing but kind and gentle? She may not have known Yukari very well, but not once had she ever given Kei a reason to mistrust her.
Nice one, Kei. Way to be an ass.
"I- uh, could I get a hot chocolate, please?" She turned to the counter to place her order, and then looked over at Yukari, smiling from ear to ear. "Thanks, senpai! You're the best. Uh, as for where we should go... Hm... How about the arcade?"

Kei, surprisingly, seemed to like the idea of romance Yukari had. It was a little surprising... but then, it wasn't really that unusual for girls their age to be romantics was it? She just shrugged in response and the conversation flowed on. Kei had honed her musical talent which was pretty cool, and the both of them got through the line at the shop pretty quickly. The bespectacled man behind the counter wasn't her dad, but he was pretty quick with the coffee order! It was a little more than she expected it to be, but that was still fine.
"Hey, it's cool, I got a little extra money in my check from last time I worked, I don't mind! As for film techniques... Well, it's a lot of stuff. It's easier to explain when I have a movie to point at, cause what makes a well-shot horror movie is a little bit different from a well-shot romance or mystery. I'll try to explain it..." Yukari explained while they left the coffee shop. The arcade wasn't far away, and she explained a few basic techniques and lenses you might use in just any movie shooting. Just the basics; it could get a little complicated!
They arrived at the arcade, Nagame Arcade , fairly quickly and through the doorway in to the dark shop you could see walls packed with arcade cabinets. They had all kinds of things! "This is Nagame Arcade, they carry a lot of popular cabinets. Lots of new stuff from the top video game companies. I'm not really a big video gamer, I usually don't hang out here much. It's no fun to just spend money to lose every time, you know? Over there across the hall is my favorite accessory shop, my dad's known the lady who owns it forever. It's my favorite shop in the Bubble!" She said, gesturing to each store in turn. There were already a bunch of boys shouting enthusiastically by one of the cabinets, cheering on one of their friends at what looked like a racing game, while several of the girls Yukari normally hung out with went inside the clothing store.
Yukari shrugged and took a sip of her drink, happy for something cold and sweet to drink. "I bet you'll make some good friends out of somebody here. But I still don't see that music shop... hm... where was it...?" Yukari trailed off, her eyes rolling over the brightly colored signs and store fronts. Nothing was jumping out at her... maybe it was just on the second floor like she thought?

While Kei had never thought shooting a movie would be easy, she certainly hadn't anticipated it being this involved, either. So many techniques and lenses and... things to consider. It was incredible that Yukari could remember it all! And this was just the basic stuff! So cool. Maybe she should try to keep an eye out for these things while watching Gekkoukan Silence... ...Though she promptly forgot about anything film-related on arriving at the arcade. The walls were lined with all kinds of games, many of which Kei hadn't seen before. "Wow, this place is huge! This is awesome!" She grinned, looking like a kid who'd been told Christmas was coming early. She turned to Yukari, still grinning, and said, "Thanks for showing me around, senpai. Would've taken me ages to find things on my own." Something about being easily-distracted made it difficult to see everything a mall had to offer. "I get what you mean about paying just to lose, though," Kei nodded, "It kinda sucks. Though, I do like winning after a lot of losses. Makes you feel like you accomplished something! ...Before you realize you spent a dumb amount of time and money on something that doesn't matter." She laughed sheepishly -- it was definitely something Kei had done before, and would likely do again. The hazards of playing arcade games... If only she could apply that line of thinking to her school work.
When Yukari pointed to the accessory shop, Kei's gaze followed, and she nodded. It definitely looked like a store Yukari would frequent -- it was trendy, fashionable, and the girls currently walking in looked like the popular sort that Yukari would fit in perfectly well with. ...Unless they were mean. In which case, she wouldn't fit in well, because Yukari was so very kind.
She grinned again, this time at Yukari's comment about making friends. "Aw, thanks senpai! I sure hope I do." She took a sip from her drink, humming when Yukari mentioned the music store. "Eh, don't worry about it -- I'm sure I can find the place on my own time!" She didn't want to be a bother, after all. Yukari was already doing so much for her already by showing her around the Bubble and buying her a hot chocolate and agreeing to go see the movie together. The last thing Kei wanted to do was make more work for her.

Kei didn't seem to get too much out of her talking about film techniques, it looked like she forgot all about it the minute she got a look inside the arcade. But what else could you expect from someone who didn't share the passion? Oh well... she seemed excited at least, and that was good. Muramoto just seemed thrilled to be here, it made Yukari wonder what it was like where she was from.
"I'm glad you're excited, Muramoto-san, I'm sure you'll get along with the guys in there playing games. I can't say I'm really in to any video games except for some puzzle apps on my phone," Yukari replied, "But I always feel really good about myself when I finally figure out a hard one so I think that probably feels kibda like beating something hard in a video game. I didn't think you'd get so fired up over just one shop~ There's a lot more here to see than just this. Seems like more shops get added to the bubble every year, sometimes it's hard to keep track!"
Yukari looked around a few more seconds before nodding to herself and walking back towards the theater. She figured Kei was still following, but he eyes hadn't been drawn to a particular store front so much as a cardboard standup advertising a Featherman movie. It stood about her height, with the character Pink Argus holding a cool pose with a fancy bow. Someone had taped a flyer to it rudely.
"Huh, a new Featherman movie? I bet the kids in town will love that. I used to watch that show all the time when I was younger, but gosh, I don't spend a lot of time channel surfing these days. I'm not sure if I'll go see this, but it made me remember something!" Yukari pulled the business flyer off of the cutout carefully while she talked, and when she was done turned to face Kei. "Next Saturday night my dad's letting me do a movie night in the coffee shop! The bubble stays open cause some of the stores here are twenty four hours and I actually live in our building, and I thought getting together with my friends for a movie night sounds fun! I haven't decided yet what we'll watch though, but I've been practicing making sushi for us to have as a snack! I'm getting pretty good at it too. You wanna come Muramoto-chan?"

"I hope so," Kei smiled, albeit a little half-heartedly; she was nowhere near as confident as Yukari in her ability to make friends. She didn't want to put a downer on their conversation though, so she kept her doubts to herself, and instead turned back to face Yukari. She felt her cheeks heat up a little when Yukari expressed that she'd been surprised at Kei's reaction -- had she really been that excited to see the arcade? Her smile turned a little more sheepish, and she scratched the back of her neck as she looked down, suddenly finding the floor very interesting. "Hah, well, my mom doesn't really like video games so..." She shrugged, and gestured to the arcade, "This is really the only chance I get to play 'em. ...Well, when I've got the yen, anyway!" Getting money to play games was a little tricky, after all, when your only source of income (your mother) didn't approve of gaming.
When Yukari started walking so did Kei, keeping just a half-pace behind. Distracted by the colourful storefronts, she didn't notice that Yukari had stopped in front of a cardboard. She nearly ran into the shorter girl, stopping just short of stepping on Yukari's heels. She took a half-step back, not wanting to crowd her friend and invade her space, and then looked up to the cutout Yukari was staring at. It looked vaguely familiar, though Kei couldn't place where she'd seen it before. The name of the show -- Featherman -- didn't ring any bells either.
She tilted her head slightly when Yukari started talking about remembering something. Did it have more to do with Featherman?
...No, no it did not. It had to do with an invitation. To a party. Yukari's party. Kei blinked once. Twice. Tried to process what she'd just been asked.
Where was the catch?
The thought came unbidden to her mind, and she almost scowled. Again, Kei felt terrible -- here Yukari was, being sweet and kind and just... Yukari. And here Kei was, doubting her intentions, waiting for the "gotcha, loser!" moment to come around and kick her down.
Ignoring the awful feeling in the pit of her stomach, Kei mustered up her cheeriest, sunniest smile. "I'd love to come! Uh, d'you need guests to bring anything? Food, drinks, uh... Games?"

Yukari was a little confused at first. Kei just stared at her like she'd reached out with a live squid and touched her with it. Was that a weird analogy? probably. He just stared, and after a minute her eyebrows furrowed.
"Uh..." She was about to say something when Kei snapped out of it. Weird. But she seemed excited, and that was good! Yukari smiled back at her and tucked the crumpled flyer back in to her bag.
"Hey, great! I'll text you the event so you don't forget. And its okay if you're late; I'll leave the door unlocked until everyone gets there. You don't have to bring anything, but... hm... maybe some snacks and a movie. That way if I mess up the sushi we still have something to eat. I invited a few of my other friends too, but I don't actually know who all's coming yet..." Yukari trailed off, pulling out her phone and peeking at the time. Oh! They were gonna be late!
"Whoa, we took longer than I thought at the coffee shop! We're gonna miss the start of the movie! C'mon Kei, let's hurry!" She didn't want to miss a single scene! Just like that, she was off!
