The shadowed stone steps shift under the breeze of a spring high noon, the steps illuminated with the noon glow created a wonderful screensaver in Naoki's opinion but was overshadowed by the landscape up top for sure, the looming shadow that was Mitsuboshi Temple was grand and breath taking for first time goers, a well earned reward for all these stupid steps it took to get there at least. The evening cold had already settled in and meant Naoki had buttoned up his red coat for extra warmth, even going so far as to wear some leather, finger-less gloves he had spare in his schoolbag. The trek upward was eerily quiet apart from the blunt swaying trees in all directions, the overhanging treeline created a sense of isolation and slight security that Naoki grew to accept since young, a time where he had to do everything for himself and nobody else, it was a little lonely. Shaking away the creeping cold, Naoki braced for a sudden gust of wind, putting weight onto the metal banister that was situated in the middle of the larger stone steps, breaking points that were useful like this instance. The winds broke away just as fast as it came, but what met Naoki's senses after was just as sudden; a child's cry all the way up here? Looking further upward the steps, Naoki spotted a contrasting hunched sky blue wearing figure sitting on some of the more steeper stone steps towards the temple, using them as a temporally chair. The cries got louder the closer Naoki got but drowned to soft sniffling once he was several feet away. On closer inspection, the sky blue colour was this little girl's one piece dress that, her hair in colour was a nut brown with a small daisy hair clip part a side of her bang. "You hurt yourself?" Her head shook, "Well are you cold?" Her head shook once again, it was strange she could wear such light clothing on a windy day like this. "Do you need something? Or know someone I can contact for you?" Naoki crouched in front of the girl, trying to get a better look at her condition while she started to rub her tears away. "My dog, it ran away..." One arm pointed towards the woods beyond to their side, well that sucks for her. "I'm sorry that your pet ran away but I'd appreciate it if I can at least make sure you'll be safe before I do anything about the dog" Naoki was insistent to the girl, "I live in the temple, I'm fine!" The girl snapped back with gusto, causing Nao to recoil slightly by effect. This is why I dislike children, they treat everything like it's the end of the world, "Okay, I'll try to find your dog, but first. Here" Naoki dropped his bat case and schoolbag to unbutton his red coat, the girl didn't look up at him but recoiled when he draped the warm coat around her shoulders. The girl almost squirmed under the heat of it but slowly calmed down further, it was Naoki's turn to start sniffing. "You travel up to the shrine and wait for me while I get your pup, okay?" Naoki tried to act stoically under the escape of heat but it failed, the girl just nodded in response while sinking further into the coat's layer, like she was shielding away from everything around her. Some awkward time was spent just waiting for her to move but Naoki decided to just his butt moving instead, the quicker he'd find this dog in the forest, the quicker he'd be back in warm leathers. Picking up his schoolbag and bat case, he asked one question before jumping into the wilderness, "What's the dog's name?" he asked as he turned back towards the steps, the sight of his red coat sleeve could barely be make out from the corner of his eye, "Taro" went the winds in response, in the same childish voice. Naoki ignored how weird this situation was, from his original goal to praying for goodluck turned to a dog scavenger hunt, the schoolkid jumped into the scenery and broke into the woods. The forest was unnaturally quiet, with even the sounds of animals and insects that should have filled the air fading away, leaving only the light crunch of twigs and dead leaves on the trail with each step Mary took. There was a familiar chill in the air, one that might have left Mary wondering if she was still in England were it not for the different 'feel' of the atmosphere. It was only going to get colder, too. She had spent most of the day going through customs and getting settled into her hotel, before finally getting the itch to explore and get a feel for the area. How this had taken her to the forest outside of the city...well, she wasn't sure. Normally, the ghost stories surrounding these woods would be enough to bring her to them, but on her first day?
In addition, the forest wasn't quite as silent as it had initially seemed. There was one sound meeting Mary's ears that didn't come from directly below her feet. And at that, one that also seemed like it didn't quite belong. A dog, barking. And, on top of that, what almost sounded like a faint whisper on the wind.
"Hmm?"
Mary looked up. Why up? She wasn't sure. There was no one above her, and nothing but the crisscrossing branches of trees overhead. She looked back down, and started back down the path. It branched up ahead, and she turned in the direction that the dog's barking had come from. It had faded back into the same silence she had experienced so far, but she still had a good idea where it had come from. A dog deep in the woods may have been lost or in trouble after all. She walked with a purpose now, but still moved fairly slow, watching her step in case of exposed roots, wild animals, or stranger things.
So when she heard the rustling and crunching of underbrush that suggested someone (or something) moving quickly and carelessly through the forest, she stopped dead, tightening her grip on her staff-turned-walking stick as though whoever (or whatever) appeared was ready to cause trouble.

Breaking through the shrubbery, Naoki met himself with a steep decline into the woodland beyond. The cold winds almost threatening to push the kid down the hazardous ground, a harsh and possibly back-breaking stumble if he proceeds too fast while the sharp small twigs and thorns of nearby shrubbery nick and scratch past exposed hand skin. Naoki decided to contend against the endless torment of nature's claws then possibly suffer a life threatening drop down such harsh terrain. The deeper the kid went, the quicker he became since the terrain slowly evened out to just unstable ground, exposed roots and small holes were nearly everywhere from the start so it forced him to take things slow anyway. By the time he started to pace himself quicker then walking speed, Naoki's arms and hands especially, were covered with small cuts and tears in clothing, looking like the kid mishandled some cat and faced the consequences in full. Hands stung every time Naoki use them to stable his balance, just ignoring the pain didn't help either but something quickly started to gain his full attention; barking, and it got louder the further he went through. Though faint and not louder then his slightly winded breath, the sounds grew with sometimes stagnant growth, it was like the dog's bark was a guide rather then a beacon. But before anymore concentration could be spared towards the thought, in his sights entered something to his right, something shorter but big in it's own right. "Eh? Hiking equipment?" It took a little longer then normal for Naoki to voice his thoughts but once he did, it clicked this, woman, is not just here out in the middle of nearly nowhere to hike, this place is uneven ground but nowhere close the hilly steps towards the temple. Already numb to most of the cold wind, most cuts on the arms already scabbed up or somewhat healed and after taking some time to awkwardly try to figure this other person out. Naoki decided to just risk it after hearing more barks again, "You, looking for the dog too?" pointing at the direction where slightly constant barking could be heard at the moment. "Didn't think anyone had such strong senses out here, you part animal too?" He tried to say the second question more as a joke, but his concern on why she was here was certainly seeped into it, even if it was for morbid curiosity. The creature who came bursting through the trees was...a person. That was a relief, but at the same time a bit of a disappointment. Running into some dangerous creature on the very first day in a strange country would have made for an exciting story. Mary visibly relaxed, turning back down the path for a moment, then again to the person who emerged. The first thing out of his mouth was something about hiking equipment, which confused Mary for just a second before she remembered the stick in her hand. That was the only 'hiking equipment' she had, beyond going for warmer and more comfortable clothes instead of her usual dress. Another sound broke the silence just as soon as it fell again, drawing Mary's attention back down the path. There was the barking again. That wasn't terribly surprising. What was a little more surprising was that the boy in front of her had noticed it as well. "The dog?" she asked. "I suppose I am. The forest is really quiet, so it stands out. Maybe it's lost."Mary spoke in fluent Japanese, but her accent complemented her appearance for a clear indication that she was not a native. Her tone was also slightly airy and indirect, suggesting that her focus was trying to shift away from the conversation and back towards what she had heard. "I don't know what you mean by part animal, though. I'm just me." She opted not to mention that the boy looked like he had been on the wrong side of one in the last few days, although her eyes lingered for just a second on the cuts on his arms. NAOKI GINROU

At least one question hit home and not out of the ballpark, though the woman's initial response sounded like she was less the sure of herself, maybe she was the real lost one? Nao piqued expression gave way from start to finished of both remarks, by the end the boy for a moment noticed her longer then necessary gaze before rubbing his arms, forcing some heat through the cold as death limbs, even if that was an exaggeration the winds still felt chilling enough for him to wince a little when friction hit initially. "Well the faster I find the pup, the closer I'll be to getting warm again". Nao started to regret giving his warm coat to the little girl, but the thought of staying out in this weather without something warm was enough to feel pity again for her, wait, did she even wear shoes? Future attention and theory crafting to this detail ended once the dog started barking again, he really was loud now that Naoki thought about it. "And I'm starting to feel bad for the dog too, all alone in this cold won't do anything well for anyone" Naoki started to trudge along the battered ground for a bit before commenting behind him, turning head slightly in the woman's direction "I'm curious on why you're in the middle of nowhere but the feeling would likely be mutual. I'm Ginrou Naoki, wanna walk and talk?" It was suspicious for her to be all the way out here, but that was of no business for him, hell he's more happy that now another distraction came in the form of the foreigner, his sniffling nose and pain can be forgotten again. Walk towards where the wind blew helped but standing there and talking would've felt a little like hell, not that Naoki knew what it's like down there. MARIAN WILSON
