9:36 … 9:37 … 9:38 …
Was the clock taunting him? There's no way time could actually be moving that slowly. He rested his elbows on the counter and stared at the door ahead of him, the thrumming of rain on the roof was audible even from inside the Bubble. Who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to be open until 10 pm on Saturdays? Kaoru, of course, knew exactly whose idea it was, he was there when his boss made the decision.
“Teenagers are always going out late on weekends, we'd probably sell more magazines and manga if we stayed open later, right Watanabe-kun?”
Kaoru kicked himself for not saying something at the time, paychecks be damned; but he supposed that was just what he deserved for assuming the old man would hire more than two part-timers to work the store.
9:42 … 9:43 …
He was tempted to just close the store early. He had swept the floor and straightened the shelves already, all he had to do was close the till and lock up. After all, who was going to walk into a bookstore in the mall at 9:45 at night?
DING DONG
He only paused for a moment to dig his nails into the palm of his hand before plastering a forced smile to his face.
“Welcome to Ito Books!” He greeted the visitor as warmly as he could, resisting the urge to throw any foreign objects their way. tags : open | notes : salt

Yukari didn't normally stay out so late, not when she had school the next day, but she'd ended up being caught by the rain when it started earlier and decided to take care of her homework at the coffee shop. Their help for the night cancelled so her dad was still there the whole time, chattering with his customers in his warm, friendly way. After her homework it had only been eight thirty, the shop wasn't closed yet, so she decided to wander through the shops that were still open and talk to her friends still on shift. It wasn't until about nine thirty that she remembered today was the day her favorite romance manga published!
So after a quick jaunt across the mall to make it in time she was happy to find the door unlocked. She was greeted cheerfully and she flashed a smile at the guy behind the counter. "Watanabe-senpai, hey! Phew! I caught you while you're still open. How are you this evening? You look bored, has the rain scared off all your customers?" Yukari asked, stepping over to the counter with a smile on her face. The young Hamada was a regular here, even worked part time on occasion after school if she wasn't doing anything else, so hopefully he didn't mind too much!
"Did my copy of Peach Baskets for this month come in today, senpai? I promise I'll pay with ny bank card instead of messing up your register!" She said with a little giggle. Atthe very least she could chat with him while h was stuck at work! "But I didn't realize the book store was going to be open so late, is there something special going on?"

Kaoru’s forced smile dissolved from his face when he saw the person who had entered the shop. Most regulars at the store knew Kaoru, and a few also knew his default demeanor was usually one of indifference. Yukari Hamada was one of the many recurring faces he saw working this store day after day, but she knew how to make a lasting impression. Kaoru had no idea how one person could have the emotional intensity of 12, but Yukari was practically the Sun incarnate.
“Hamada-san I am literally always bored at this place, at least the rain gives me something to listen to.”
The ambient music at the store was incessant enough to drive anyone crazy, and Kaoru tended to ignore it as best as he could most days. Rain hardly ever stopped people from coming to the store, if anything the shops in the complex got busier as people attempted to escape getting wet. Kaoru internally shuddered at the thought of walking home in this weather, and almost didn’t catch Yukari’s question.
He paused for a second, thinking back to that morning’s shipment, then held a finger up and crouched under the counter. There were several boxes of weekly and monthly magazines, comic books, and manga. Kaoru flicked through the one marked E—H, and picked out the one behind the label “Hamada”. He flipped the book and briefly glanced at the large, bubbly lettering on the front displaying “Peach Baskets”. He pushed himself back up to the counter and held the book up, index finger tapping the cover.
“Ito thinks the extra hour on weekends will help us sell more young adult books. That’s 450 yen.” he punched the price into the register while placing the book flat on the counter. “Would you like a bag for your fluffy nonsense?”

Although she'd kinda hoped he'd maintain his smile, but Watanabe was just that kind of guy who always wore that dull expression. "Aw, c'mon senpai, the music here is nice! I love this style of pop!" Yukari replied, raising her arms a little for emphasis. But he still seemed blasé about it, he just ducked under the counter to see if they had her book. How boring! She made a point of sighing loudly to let him know how disappointed she was. He wasn't even trying to have a conversation! But he popped up with her book anyways, and that was great.
"Oh, yay! It came!" She chimed, pulling out her wallet from her little purse before she picked up on the 'fluffy nonsense' thing. And that stopped her for a bit. She glared at him and dropped her arms down by her sides. "Hey! It's not nonsense. It's a really cute manga! It's about these two third years falling in love just before they both go off to university. I don't know what it's got to do with peaches... It's actually supposed to be ending in November, so I'm going to have to find a new series. Hey! You look at a lot of these right? Do you know a good romance manga to pick up?"
Yukari finished pulling her card out to pay for her book while she talked. Slide through the machine, type in her pin, and then it was up to him to finish off the transaction. She did wish he had a little more to say though, so she started talking again. She put on a smile for him and crossed her hands behind her back after she'd put her wallet away. "So... do you want me to hang around and talk to you while you wait for your time to run out? I'm waiting on my dad to be done at work so he can drive us home so I'm not doing anything else. How's your hunt for a band coming? Have you found anybody yet?"

A catalogue of manga scrolled through Kaoru’s mind, all with bright pastel covers and cutesy fonts. Fruit’s Girl, Cashmere Dream, Silky Wanderer, Your Charming Diver, Angelic ~ Destiny, Oh My Coach, so many manga…
“Come back when the time rolls around and there’ll be plenty new manga to choose from. I swear new romance manga shows up just about every month, most people don't even bother getting full volumes and just subscribe to magazines instead…” He motioned to the rack labelled “NEW” near the front of the store where there were at least 5 weekly or monthly shoujo magazines. “I can’t really say modern romance manga is my thing. Elite of Sweets and You Are My Splash will always be classics, everything published past 2015 just doesn't catch my interest.”
Kaoru paused a moment. Damn Yukari Hamada and her ability to get people talking. He didn't have much time to be embarrassed about his rambling, Yukari's continued chatting caught his attention for a bit. She sure could talk… not that it was a bad thing, considering Kaoru wasn't much of a talker about most subjects.
He waved his hand nonchalantly when she asked to hang around, “Store closes in 5 so if you don’t mind standing for a bit you can stick around. Ito gets on my case if I clock out before closing time.” He rested his elbows on the counter and released an exasperated sigh at the mention of his musical journey coming to an unceremonious halt.
“Not a single email. I must have put posters up all over the city but I don’t think anyone’s even bothered reading them.” He shrugged his shoulders “People these days just don't appreciate the value of art and collaboration.” He made a frustrated gesture with his hands “Or musical innovation, I suppose… it'd be easier if I knew anyone who could at least hold a guitar"

Yukari had been expecting a good answer out of senpai, but he let her down! He pointed her at the magazine rack and she puffed a cheek. That wasn't what she was after! But he did recommend some good books at least. Even if she'd already finished them. She sighed and shook her head, and tucked her new book in to her bag. "That's not really what I'm after Senpai, I like having a whole volume to read so I don't run out too fast. I've read those older books though, I have the collection on my book shelf at home! They were great~" Yukari trailed off, recalling the warm feelings she had about the touching romance of You Are My Splash, about a lifeguard and a lady he saved from drowning. It was the sweetest book she'd read so far, even if it was so old. But on the bright side, he didn't seem to mind her sticking around either! That was good. She wasn't quite ready to go back home yet. But his musical pursuits weren't going so well... Oh! Wait! Yukari clasped her hands behind her back and scrunched her forehead, thinking about people she knew. "Um, actually, I met a new student the other day who was asking about the music store while I was showing her around the Bubble. We went and saw Gekkoukan Silence together, it was a pretty scary movie. It was about this girl who gets stuffed in a gym locker at school overnight and ends up in this twisted other world! ... oh, man, why'd I do that to myself? Now I'm gonna be freaked out when I walk back to the coffee shop..." The girl trailed off, her train of thought totally derailed by remembering a particularly scary moment in the movie. Brr... but that just meant Kaoru would have to jump in, right? OOC: Scared herself thinking about a movie she saw a few days ago, sad. KAORU WATANABE

Kaoru’s thoughts wandered as Yukari trailed off again, that girl sure could talk. He began to become increasingly aware of his own body language, was he frowning too hard? Was he glaring?
His thoughts were interrupted when Yukari mentioned her movie outing and the new student she met. She quickly started trailing off again after mentioning the movie but… wait, music shop?
“Gekkoukan… huh? Wait a second Hamada you said you met someone asking about a music shop?” He leaned forward across the desk, giving Yukari an intense glare of determination.
“Yukari Hamada, if you can tell me anything about this student you met… I don’t know what I’ll do but I’ll definitely owe you one.” He propped his elbows up on the counter dramatically, clapping his hands together in front of his face as if in prayer. “Hamada-san, please help me I’m literally desperate at this point.”

Yukari had almost totally zoned out in to her own head when Kaoru bounced her back. She'd gone a bit off the monsters and such in her head and on to the cinematography, and what a tragedy it was that the movie would probably never see an international release, and... Oh, oops! He was right there! She must have been more tired than she thought. She dragged herself back to the present space and smiled sheepishly at the book store cashier. "Sorry, I think I'm just tired. Her name is Kei Muramoto. She's a first year at Mishiro, where I go. If you want I can introduce you. She mentioned looking for a music store, but I don't remember if she said she played anything or not...But she seemed pretty nice. If I introduce you you have to be nice to her okay? I don't want her to quit hanging out with me just cause I introduced her to you and you were in a *mood*"[/pink] Yukari replied, doing an 'air quote' with her free hand. "But if you promise me that, I'll tell her about your band and ask her if she actually plays anything. The movie was really good though, if you're in to scary stuff you should go see it. I heard it's even competing with some of those international films from Hollywood, so I can't be the only one who thinks that! I'm still getting chills from it..." ((Tag: KAORU WATANABE , I'm sorry but let's GET THIS BACK GOIN))
