Summer had finally come to Sanyo. It was the third summer that Seiji had the pleasure to experience in the city. A cool breeze blew across Seiji's face as he sat in the shadow of an oak tree, creating a contrast with the warmth of the day. Today was one of life's little miracles, in more ways than one. The weather report said that it was a perfect day for walking around, for getting out and having a bit of fun with some friends. Unfortunately, Seiji had no friends. Today was even more of a miracle for Seiji due to it being this nice on a Sunday, the one day he had to have just a bit of rest and relaxation after his shift ended at his second job.
So, he sat in the shade of his tree, utterly friendless, and read a book. It was written by an American gutter rat, giving his languishing, nihilistic view on life, love, and baseball. Bukowski sure knew how to make a man want a cigarette, which was unfortunate because Seiji very much couldn't smoke in public. Glancing up from his book, his honeyed eyes scanned his surroundings. He realized he was far from the only student there, but he was certainly one of the few there by himself.
A dozen or more happy couples were all walking around, there by the bridge, wasting away one of life's fleeting days where it felt like everything was going to be alright with one another. It was a good way to spend the day, Seiji supposed, even if he hadn't managed to make all that many friends in his time at Futaba High. He saw more than a few people he recognized from Futaba High, most of whom waved at him. Seiji tossed them a half-hearted wave back, lazily returning to his book.
If Seiji could grin, he might just have offered one up there, thinking about what he must look like to his fellow Futabans. At school, his single uniform was always perfectly pressed, jacket worn just according to the dress code, like a straight-laced overachiever. Here, he couldn't help but think he looked like a delinquent. His white button-up was completely undone, exposing the black undershirt he wore. Gone were the professional looking pants of his high school and in their place was a pair of dark blue jeans. He fancied himself looking like quite the delinquent at the moment, Japan's own rebel without a cause.
Reaching the end of one of the book's many short stories, Seiji groaned. Once more, he'd kill for a cigarette to take the edge off the day. The book was in English, as indicated by the title being printed in that language. It's how he got away with reading a book like the one he was perusing in public. Most of his peers couldn't read the sordid little tales in his book about angels with paper wings getting killed for money or impromptu trips across the country to get away from wronged women. Seiji sat up, looking out across the bridge, caught in his own little world while contemplating the last story he read.

Summer time was the best time! The sun was shining, the weather was warm and nature presented another fresh season for pictures! And it was an excuse to wear a few new outfits that Spring was still just a little top breezy for. Yukari had already gone for her daily run that morning and that meant the rest of the day was free for her favorite past time; photography! Plenty of happy couples willing to have their picture taken, plenty of cute dogs to pet, plenty of manicured bushes teeming with life...
It was perfect, really. And then she spotted something really impressive as she passed over the little wood bridge over the park's man-made river. A boy about her age was sitting on a park bench reading a book with clear English lettering on the binding. Was he a tourist? He looked either very tourist-y or very delinquent-y. Still, either way, it had been a while since Yukari had been able to speak English at anyone and be proper understood! She practically skipped up to him with a big, friendly grin on her face.
"Hi! I saw you reading a book in English. Are you visiting Sanyo for the summer?" Asked Yukari in English. Sounded a little rusty to her ears, but she giggled anyways. She was just too excited over this. "I'm Yukari Hamada, I'm sorry if I'm bothering you but I couldn't resist. I haven't gotten to speak English in a long time!"

A pleasant, if overeager voice snapped Seiji out of his contemplative reading. For once, he was so focused on his book that he didn't notice the girl until she spoke, causing a momentary look of shock to flash across his face. As soon as his brown eyes found the source of the voice, it was back to business as usual. It was a pleasant surprise, getting to hear English. Normally, he only got to speak it in his English class, which he aced, or when his brother decided to humor him and talk in his native tongue. He was happy that it was a pretty girl that interrupted his thoughts, at least.
That didn't mean he wasn't going to have a little bit of fun with her, just to see how she'd react.
"I'm actually a world traveler, here on the final stretch of my journey to find love in every country of the world." He looked very serious when he said this. The sentence was spoken in perfect English. Perhaps there was a bit of rust there, but he couldn't tell it, given his ample opportunities to stay sharp. "No. I'm just messing around. I live here in Sanyo." He moved over politely on the bench, offering her a seat, if she wished to take it. "Sit down if you want. It's nice to speak English for a change."
He looked at the girl, who was apparently named Yukari, and nodded. "I'm Seiji, by the way. Seiji Dalton. Sometimes I go by Seth just because it sounds less awkward. If I had to guess by your cheery attitude and youthful demeanor, you're a student, yeah? Where do you go to school? I'm a third year at Futaba High, myself." He tried to not come across as snide when he said that. Having lived in the city for a few years, he was aware of what sort of reputation people from his school got.

Yukari blinked in shock at the stranger's declaration. And then her expression turned whimsical. A traveler looking for love? Wow, how roma--
Oh. He was messing with her.
She crinkled her nose at him and put her hands on her hips. "Ha ha, very funny!" She replied with mock frustration, but she was smiling. Was it really that obvious she was that kind of girly girl?
Actually that was a stupid question, of course it was.
Anyways, he offered her a seat on the bench and she took it, nodding along when he said it was nice to be speaking the language again. He introduced himself and she raised her eyebrows at that. "Wow, it must be hard living here with such a Western name. And you said you go to Futaba? Yikes, the kids there can be really mean. I have to be honest, and I hope you don't hear this the wrong way, but I wouldn't have guessed you went there. That's where the really rich or really smart kids go. You don't dress like I'd expect. I go to Mishiro, I'm a second year there. I'm on their track team, and I'm the school journal's photographer! I managed to win my race against your school last year, even though we lost overall... But we'll get you this year!" Yukari giggled, looking around the park at all the lively stuff going on.
"So what are you reading, 'wandering lover'? I don't recognize the title. Not that... I read a lot of English books. I'm more in to magazines about films and filmmaking. And English is hard, you have so many different words for the same things and so many words that just ignore the rules! But it sounds cool. And I guess that's all that matters, huh?"[/color]
