Yomiko was born with jet-black hair but recently dyed it a dark shade of purple. She consists this as best as she can while trying not to accidentally break rules. She has a lithe figure that's been toned a little bit due to her private sessions with a kendo instructor, the only person she seemed to manage to get along with before she decided to abandon everything resembling a normal life. However, she's very much around the same height as an average Japanese woman of her age. She often wears darker fashion which may be misinterpreted by foreigners to be typical "emo" "scene" wear. However she does not get into the whole punk stuff. She often carries a blue duffel bag with her containing her ornately, Japanese hand-crafted flute amongst other necessities. Since she ran away from home, this is all she has on her, including the clothes she wears on her back. Of note is that she has a strangely ornate golden headdress she pilfered from home before running away. It was apparently a prized possession of the Tsuruyas, Yomiko stole it and wore it to prove a message of rebellion and hatred.
PersonalityLikes: sordid music, being given attention, not being held to standards, muffins
Dislikes: when people brag, people who shove their achievements in her face, people who make fun of her
Hobbies: playing music on her flute, working on swordplay
Goals: to be inspired, to be driven and not be aimless, to be given the opportunity to shine and fight for something, most of all to be seen as an equal
Yomiko seems to be the typical victim of circumstance, she's apathetic and uncaring about most things life has to offer by now. All changes when she plays her flute in the middle of the street, but of course that never lasts long. Yomi has lost the spark for life as it is, and while a deep part of her wishes that could change, she's lost the will to keep searching for that which drives her to keep living. She's lost that spark for life which prompted her to abandon her family and go rogue. It wasn't merely out of a rebellious, childish streak, but rather a desire to break free from her own chains and to look for something else that could save her from her inner turmoil. Unfortunately, that self-journey and search for self-enlightenment hasn't exactly gone anywhere yet, and she's at that point where she's entering the true pit of despair. There was a time and point in Yomiko's life when she was younger where she might have been a socially active and adept person, but circumstances seemed to dictate otherwise.
That isn't to say Yomiko is unintelligent, or isn't street-smart or savvy. On the contrary. Living on the streets as a street performer for the past year of her miserable existence has given her some form of bravado and street-savvy, if not warped her manner of speaking to fit her own whimsy and her own inner ideals of equality, hearkening back to the Dark Ages, parallelizing values instilled into Knights back then into all peoples, man or woman. As such, she does carry herself as a vagrant in the Medieval ages, a byproduct of her lack of intimate social contact with friends, family, or anyone she could consider meaningful. While she has basic social graces and etiquette, a result of delving into fantasy novels as a child has somewhat muddled how she carries herself as a person, coming off as insanely old-fashioned for a twenty-year-old. Though she's got a cleverness about her, she rarely heeds to its intuition as half the time she generally doesn't care, for she feels she has no purpose.
HistoryYomiko is the younger sister of a pair of two girls in the Tsuruya family, a long line of jewellers and craftsmen who took the craft incredibly seriously. Seeking better business opportunities and an interest in learning new tricks, the Tsuruya family relocated to Sanyo early on. Yomiko's older sister was a natural at it, being able to emulate the parents' technique and work at a young age, Yomi did not fare as well. She was always held to the same standards as Amaya, Yomi could never hope to live up to them. While Amaya was kind to Yomi and understanding of her lack of talent, the sister being showered with the praise and favor of her parents was always a sore spot for the girl. One day, Amaya made Yomi a flute, which she has kept to this day, a cruel reminder that despite the shit she was given from the family, Amaya at the very least seemed to respect her at some basic fundamental level, playing to Yomi's own so-called talents. Yomi didn't even do badly in school, in fact she was a top-class student - she was very smart, often immersing herself in books and the arts in order to desperately make the gap between her and Amaya in the family. Using the flute Amaya made for her, Yomi became an incredibly good flutist that often got accolades at performances she would try to audition for of her own volition, since her parents couldn't give enough fucks about her.
Why? Well, Yomi was incapable of carrying on the family tradition. So, Amaya was the chosen one. Yomi hated it. For the past 18 years of her miserable existence, constantly being overshadowed by her sister and living under her darkness, Yomi sought to look for avenues to channel her inner rage and frustration. She looked to kendou and other swordplay, kenjutsu and the like. She met someone willing enough to tutor her for only a meager sum, in fact it was agreed upon that if Yomiko performed the flute for him every weekend, the training would continue. Feeling blessed for this privilege, she gracefully accepted the proposition. Every Saturday, Yomi would perform on her flute for the kenjutsu teacher at his dojo. Eventually, Yomi became well-versed enough with the sword to not accidentally injure herself, or those around her. She gained a semblance of control, while she was not perfect and not at all immune from clumsiness, Yomiko found a newfound power in her, that she could do something. Yomiko thanked her instructor for everything he'd done; for the first time in her life, Yomiko felt inspiration.
Unfortunately, that inspiration was Yomiko deciding to leave her family. It's not like they really cared if Yomi was around anyway. And in fact, they didn't even notice she was gone - well, her parents didn't, predictably enough. Amaya found out Yomiko had left the household through a window and had made off with the mother's magnum opus - a golden headdress that represented the crescent phases of the moon. Amaya immediately told the parents about it. Understandably in a huge rage, the parents threatened to mete out a huge punishment once Yomi was found. Amaya knew the reason why Yomiko left in the first place and decided to also look for her herself. Eventually Amaya found Yomi holed up underneath the Sanyo Bridge where she was living there as a hobo.
Amaya warned Yomi that if she was ever found, she would be punished and it's possible that her hands would be crippled as a result of punishment. Grudgingly giving the headdress back to Amaya, Yomi demanded that they lay off her case and leave her alone. Amaya knew that she couldn't convince Yomi to do anymore than this, so Amaya managed to give the headdress back to her parents and made up a story about Yomi leaving the city already, but felt remorseful about stealing it so she gave it back to Amaya before running off for good.
It was a win/win, Yomi got to get her family to back off while her family regained their lost masterpiece. Now, Yomi uses the bridge as her shelter while she hops around attempting to earn money by performing on her flute on the streets. However, Yomi didn't know that her parents thought she left the city...
EquipmentMain Weapon - a bokutou that she kept as a memento of her days as a student of the sword. It does Slashing damages.
